A bit harsh on Peacock. His PB and all previous have been set in open stadia. To hit two 79s in qualifying in the birdsnest is really PB territory equivalent to his 83m.

Are you still convinced of that argument after last night's JT final?

I wasn't implying that Peacock had massively underperformed. He came in as around 15-20th best, and that's how it played. I was merely pointing out that Aussie throwers have typically struggled to reproduce 80+ form at this level. Peacock has done a much better job in Europe this year than most past Aussie throwers...

I can convince myself of anything, it's convincing other that I have trouble with.

Throwing in a big stadium is generally more difficult than an open venue where steady winds in the right direction can make a good throw great. A stadium can create detrimental winds quite easily but not really beneficial winds. In most cases, still air is better than strong winds which can flow over and push down on the javelin.

The large majority of Zelezny's big throws, including the WR were in small scale locations. It's a rare thing to exceed 90m in an enclosed stadium, so Yego's performance is spectacular and, as far as I can tell, it's the best enclosed stadium performance with Zelezny next at 92.12m in Tokyo (presuming '64 Olympic stadium).

Jan did throw further at Edmonton WC but this was a very small stadium with substantially open ends.

That's a long winded way to say yes, I still believe that Peacock performed well against a high quality field at around his best ever standard as did the final field with everybody down a couple of metre on their PBs(except Yego).

Pretty decent day session today with both discus men through, Patterson into the HJ final (first Aussie since 1991!), Wellings running better than any other Aussie distance runner for quite a few champs (and defying my rule of thumb that being coached/poached by Bideau pretty much kills anyone's career), and Jenneke off to semis. Stratton did well for 14th in LJ qualifying. Only Gregson was a dud (back to my Bideau theory?).

Patterson will be interesting to watch but how many competitions has she actually had the last two years?

Stratton not far off her best and only a few centimetres from the final. She will need to mover her reliable performance up into the 6.70s meaning a 6.85 PB to make finals next year. Still, she did beat Rees.

Not sure about Gregson. I think he was unfortunate to be in a heat with some good tacticians with superior kicks. Ingebritson from Norway with similar PBs to Gregson was also pushed out of Q.

Wellings, the mobile injury, did qualify by taking advantage of being Heat2. I would be pleased to see her perform well in the final given her age and injury history.

Jenneke won't make it to the final in the absence of wholesale hurdle destruction,s o she's running for a PB at this stage. If she can get there, it will be a successful meet for her.

Hugely pleasant surprise that Starc has made it through to the HJ final with 2.31. Looked in trouble at previous two heights. Junior Baden looked good too and hopefully he can stay healthy for years to come...
