  • Abeylegesse - 14:24.68 WR!

Seeing as this little gem was hidden away in the Bislett thread (and had so few comments), Elvan deserves her moment of glory.

She ran a great race last night and, much like Kenny's WR, she took it on pretty much almost by herself (mainly in the second half). Many women (Dibaba, Defar, Tulu, Wami, Adere, Radcliffe, etc...) have been capable of breaking this WR in the past, but none have quite got there. But finally, Abeylegesse has made it a much more respectable WR (both based on time and considering who she took the record from).

It's time for the record to be taken into the low 14:20's.... can Elvan do it?! Also, would anyone bet against her for winning the Olympics? She's hinted towards doubling up (after her recent 3:58 1500m run), but judging by the article on the iaaf.org site, she is "100% sure" that she'll be the OG champ.

The most important question: how the heck do you pronounce her name?

      Lol!

      EL-van AB-ay-la-GESS

(Some people add an extra "ee" or "ah" on the end of the surname... I'm not sure which is correct).

Ah, I see! Many thanks. That rolls right off the tongue--she'll be a household name here for sure!

God help us if Anoma Sooriyaarachchi ever breaks a world record!!

              Hehe ;-) No worries.

Anyone know if Lentoiaina Ramalalanirina is any relation to Nicole Ramalalanirina...?? They're both from Madagascar, but Nicole now runs for France. Maybe they will one day share a podium with Anoma Sooriyaarachchi for the most difficult-to-pronounce podium EVER!

Or through marriage we could get a couple of these names hypenated together. Pronouncing them would become a new Olympic event.

Yes! If Gebregziabher Gebremariam married Lentoiaina Ramalalanirina, we could have:

                  Lentoiaina Ramalalanirina-Gebremariam

which would be worth at least 4 points in an Olympic name-pronouncing competition.

I love it! Let's work on getting them introduced...

Please, let's not. We could be losing track announcers by the dozen, who would flat-out refuse to call any meet where someone with that kind of name was entered.

Don:t shoot the messenger for the lack of 5k recap coverage -- tv cut out most of the race! I don:t know how it was shown on Eurosport.

Has anyone noticed that the fastest 5k ever run has finally been surpassed - and it was NOT the previous world record!

was that the split in the 10K?

                              easy one

                              wang ran 14'26 for the 2nd 5k in her 29'31 WR !!!

if she'd run the 5k proper in '93, she shoulda run ~ 14'00

so we are lucky the chinese left this record alone for mere " mortals" to chase
