Currently, the top 8 American finishers in each event in the NCAA championships earn all-American honors. Has this always been the case? I was particulurlay interested in 1982. Was the same criteria used in the NCAA's in that year?

Actually, the top 8 finishers are All-American as are the additional Americans it takes to get 8 Americans. For example, an individual event could have up to 16 A-A's in one NCAA meet (if the top 8 are non-Americans).
I beleive it used to be top six but I am not sure when/if it changed.
