  • Which World Championship Event?

If you could select only one event (women and men) from the Beijing World Championships as the one event you are most anticipating, which event would it be and why? Remember, only one event. Not one event for men and one for women. Just one event total. No ties are allowed.

I think for me it is the men's triple jump because there are at least two jumpers who I believe can break the current world record. Should be a fantastic event.

You are free to agree with my choice or select another event.

    Women's 200m

It will be very competitive with Schippers, Ahoure and Thompson (and others). I am hoping the title can stay in Jamaica with VCB and SAFP winning the two previous championships. There is also a lot of young talent (DAS, Pardini, Mcgrone) that could pull an upset.

While the obvious one would be the m100, I'll go with the Decathlon, just because AE has been out, and I think TH is due for a big number. Plus, it's a drama in 10 acts - more to savor.

Either W 15 or 5 because of Dibaba.

The men's 400m because the field seems to be the deepest it's been in quite some time. When was the last time we had three men under 44 going into a championship (or ever for that matter). Medal placings are up in the air for me, which makes it more suspenseful.

Agreed with mens triple Jump. Not because of the WR, I think Pichardo or Taylor adding 21 or 23 cm to their current PB's respectively may be a stretch, but for the simple fact that they are both over 18m multiple times this season, and making it look so easy.

Also the entertainment is spread out over time instead of a few seconds or minutes like the running events.

              The Men's 100 meters.

According to his lordship, the whole sport is riding on the winner. If Gatlin wins the Bird's Nest will collapse into a sinkhole dragging the event across the River Styx. If Bolt wins angels, in Puma shoes, will dance with teddy bears on a rainbow as a team of unicorns deliver Usain his gold medal. There is no other event.

The M100, because of Gatlin vs Bolt. Otherwise, I am a big fan of Shot Put. Kovacs vs Storl will be on fire. But also W1500... too difficult to choose.

                  Women's 1500.
(Would have chosen Women's 5000, but 1500 is 1st on the schedule, so Dibaba might be tired from the 1500, so might not be as effective in the 5000.)

I chose the 1500 to see what Dibaba chooses to/needs to run.
Will she try to smoke the field with a 3:52?
Or will she rely on her kick in a 3:55-3:57 race?

But my interest doesn't stop with Dibaba.

I'm also interested in two other factors.

Can either or both of the top Americans beat Hassan?

                  And if so, which one?

Will the US "winner" (of their own personal contest) break Rowbury's AR?

The 5000 would be tops ONLY if Dibaba & Ayana went for the WR.
But not just to break it----say, 14:08 or 14:09.
To SHATTER it beyond recognition----with a time that begins with 13!!

mJT because it's completely unpredictable and has been very high quality all season long. This could be like Abakumova vs. Spotakova in Daegu 2011 but with 6 guys duking it out.

Extremely unlikely, because as we all know, championship events don't have pacers and tend to be tactical. But, one can always hope!

                        Agree:

                        1) Deca
                        2) 400
                        3) 400H
                        4) 800 (no foot race quite matches the excitement of the two lapper!)
                        5) 200
                        6) SP (Kovacs' explosiveness has me intrigued)
                        7) HJ (Barshim is truly something special)
                        8) Steeple, (just because of the rock star Jagar)
                        9) 1500, I want to see Matt C. medal.
                        10) LJ, the US is due!

ouch, just realized the OP wanted one event, no ties... Im only 9 events over , I guess it is the Deca.

If Bolt and Gatlin make it through to the final the tension before the mens 100m will be epic.
