Masterstrack.com does a great job keeping up with the over-40 set - here's a piece on the double-gold winner.

What age is considered Masters in the USA? I have seen some Masters Championships results listed with athletes 37 and older.

It's supposed to be 40, but i remember hearing (i think on a TV broadcast) something about "and now women will be able to compete in masters competitions as long as they're over 35 years old, just like the men right now).

Something to that effect. I don't understand it.

1,500m runner Jim Sorensen is 37-years-old, and has run 3.43 this season. I don:t know if he will be considered a masters athlete as of yet.

I think for women, the masters age is 35 but for men it is 40. Some people have been trying to get the men's masters age changed to 35 though.

There are 30-34 and 35-39 categories for both men and women, but Masters track is universally understood to be 40+. There is also Seniors Games track which is 50+, and is run separately from Masters competitions. When I get to 60, I'm starting Geezer Track. I'm sure I'll make a million in that.

tafnut, I WON the geezer division at a 5K Trail Run last month. However I also finished last in that division as well.

                1 is a great number !

Thanks for the website!!! I noticed that Brian Pope (41) is running great. American records of 8:16.94 and 14:17.36 for the 3,000m and 5,000m already this outdoor season. That is not too much slower than his PR's of a dozen years ago. Mother Nature is not winning the battle against him evidently.

Great to see Brian running so well, he is truely a very talented runner and heck of good guy. I trained with him for several years (88-91) and he was a groomsmen in my wedding.

IAAF Council at its spring meeting (see T&FN, May) changed men from 40 to 35, to match women. No idea if USATF will follow suit.

                      Will they back date it?

So Carlos Lopez won the Oly Gold in the Marathon as a masters?

With the growing list of athletes competing at a very high level into their 40's, especially in the distance races, the movement to 35 seems almost absurd.

On second thought .... Hey I'm already a master runner then (35). Watch out Brian Pope I'm making a come back (LOL).

Totally agree .... this 35 business is stupid. 40's a good round number for both genders.

Right. Regardless of what the official decision is, really impressive "mature" performances start at 40, not 35...

So this 3:44.89 Luiz Jose Gonsalves (4.12.58) SPAIN Rio de Janeiro 14 June 1999 "World Record" may be challenged if Sorensen can stay healthy another two years and 11 months. Sorensen has hovered between 3.41-3.44 the past several years, with last year (3.42 and provisional OT qualifier at 36) and so far this year (3.43) no exception.

I didn't really notice a slowdown till 40, but then, hoooo doggies, it's a wild ride after that. You have to work three times as hard to get half the benefit and then there's that little issue of recalcitrant muscles deciding to fray rather than grow. I don't know how Merlene Ottey does it, but she's our idol.

For Roger (male first name!) to hurdle 42" -ers under 14 is Amazing.
