This race will go one of 3 ways....

Dibaba WALKS the first laps at 80-90 seconds each, then pulls a "Farah" & dumps a 55 second last 400, gaining 30 meters on everyone and cruising to the win.

Ayana hits first 3000 at WR pace (8:28 to 8:30) with Dibaba right on her shoulder, then they slow it down until the final 400 to 600, when Dibaba again blasts away to the win.

Dibaba decides to DESTROY the WR, runs 8:20 to 8:24 for the first 3000, then amazingly, keeps going, runs 13:5X, making her the Usain Bolt of distance running!

Don't know what the US trio will do, but hoping all 3 break 15:00!!

I honestly cannot imagine a scenario that has anyone beating Dibaba.

As with EVERY running event where there are heats, the first heat pretty much determines how fast the 2nd heat runs....or SHOULD run!!

So let's say Heat 1 has 5th place at 15:20, with the 5th fastest "loser" at 15:30.

That lets the Heat 2 runners KNOW what they NEED to run to make the final.
The Heat 2 "losers" had better be faster than 15:30!!

If Heat 2 allows the pace to settle at, say, 15:50 or so, they're just throwing away whatever chance they have!

            Look at the men.
            The first heat was SLOW!.
So the 2nd heat's 5 "losers" only needed to run 13:45's or so to make it in.
(They didn't need to run the 13:19's or 13:20's they did!!)

Hopefully, the first Women's heat will be slow too.
That way, Abbey D and Marielle will KNOW what they need to run to make it!

Dibaba got tired of the pack, sprinted to the front, then took it easy to the line.

No Amis moving on. Abbey D in the 16s. Must be super hot/humid. Ayana looked like she was out for a jog.

                        Sorry, Tully through, my error.

Ayana wasted energy that she is going to need desperately to have the slightest chance of dealing with Dibaba. I really just don't get it.

With the heat and humidity, Ayana is really up against it, because it would be incredibly risky to try a really fast pace, and if it's slow she will probably lose 2nd to Cherono, as she did in Moscow. If they had cool conditions, she could run away from the Kenyans.
                              Cheers,
