Gebremeskel a DNS for ETH. Merga is in.

Among athletes entered, the three ETH are top three on the time list for 2015 and Ali Kaya is #4.

Going to be tough for both Rupp and Hill to get auto qualifiers from that second heat. Neither likes to push the pace, so could get tense if the heat turns tactical.

First heat very slow. Gebrihiwet wins in 13:45, other 4 auto-qualifies were Merga, Soi, True and Farrell.

Eritrean Osman was 6th and Okasa of Japan 7th.

The other Kenyan, Kipsang, was 8th. Looks like he is out, based on the very slow time. Last lap was only a tad under 57. Last 2K were 2:34 and 2:31. Kipsang took a big lead, pushing the pace after 3K with laps of 63, 61, then 62. Pack caught him pack up with about 700 to go, then he didn't have much kick the last 100.

Farah nearly falls to the track with 200 to go. Wow! Rupp & Hill through.

It was scary. But he might have been able to get up and finish top ten. Or advance on a protest.

Don't want to see it in the final, for sure.

Top 10 from heat 2 all through. Kenyan Isiah Koech was 10th ... but well back of the kickers the last lap. Farah very nearly went down with 150m to go, looks like he got a bit tangled with Ahmed immediately behind him, to the inside. At first I thought it was with Rupp, straight behind Farah, with the contact.

Lots of bumping and stumbling in this heat. Rupp eased way up the last 50, knowing the top 10 would go through. Ryan Hill also through.
