  • Has Kenya ever topped medal table at WC?

Nice to see them winning medals outside of their usual long distance events.

I've never understood the IAAF's bizarre (to me) accounting of "topping the table" when not having the most medals, rather basing it on most golds.

GH, Yes I agree it's odd, a country with 10 silvers and no golds has clearly done better than a country with a single medal that is gold, but on the other hand I think 2 Golds is a better performance than 3 bronze for example. So either way it's going to be a little messy.

Good example is China. they obtained 7 silvers, but are ranked 11th because of only 1 gold. And if that Gold was Silver, they would drop down to 20th....

nice championships for china (even without a star like liu) and what does the future hold for them? male sprinters and long jumpers are coming up; plus the women throwers… and pole vaulters.

It seems its only an issue when the US does not have the most gold medals.

              So sad.

and 10th is cuba, with only 3 medals but 2 are gold.

I recall a similar discussion here years ago. Total wins.

That is why it would be nice if they scored it like any other track meet. I came up with the following scores using 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring. Quite possible I made some errors, but should be close:

                      Top 10 overall:

                      1. USA - 229
                      2. Kenya - 193
                      3. Jamaica - 148
                      4. Germany - 119.5
                      5. Great Britain - 103
                      6. China - 102
                      7. Ethiopia - 92
                      8. Poland - 73
                      9. Canada - 71.5
                      10. Russia - 65

                      Top 10 men:

                      1. (tie) USA & Kenya - 121
                      3. Jamaica - 57
                      4. Poland - 55
                      5. China - 47
                      6. Canada - 46.5
                      7. Germany - 44.5
                      8. Great Britain - 43
                      9. Russia - 42
                      10. France - 32

                      Top 10 women:

                      1. USA - 108
                      2. Jamaica - 91
                      3. Germany - 75
                      4. Kenya - 72
                      5. Ethiopia - 71
                      6. Great Britain - 60
                      7. China - 55
                      8. Netherlands - 31
