2015 Year of the Heptathlon, American-style

American heptathletes racked up points like never seen before in 2015. And it’s not even close.

Most performances in a year over 6000 – 23 (previous best 11, 2008). An amazing 12 different meets in 2015 had at least one American over 6000.

    Most performers in a year over 6000 – 12 (previous best 7, 2014).

It may not set the clocks back to 1986, when Jackie Joyner-Kersee set her first World Record of 7148. A couple months earlier, JJK set her first heptathlon American Record, breaking Jane Frederick’s 6803 from 1984. To date, both remain by far the best Americans in the 7-eventer.

I'd say Hyleas Fountain wasn't that far behind Frederick. The only thing Frederick really had on her was health, which made for a longer, better career.

Except for spraining her ankle before the 84 Games.

        Update!

Previous best of U.S. performances over 6000/year actually was 17, back in 1996.

And 1996 and 1995 can be added to the list of previous years with 7 Americans over 6000.
