Yeah isn't track fun?

We are all on a little ball spinning around a larger ball called the " sun"... We are having such a great time .. This is so much fun.

Hey guys let's see who can escape gravity the furthest.. Ready? Jump.. How high did you get ? Cool..

Hey guys let's go to an oval track and let's see who can escape gravity's pull the best..

Let's see who can create the most force on the ground as we are spinning around the sun and then at the same time rotating around ourselves like idiots on a little planet that has no clue what it's doing other than just spinning around another larger ball..

This is so much fun.. We are all having such a great time doing all these little revolutions and spins and on top of that more spins.. So we are spinning around ourselves on a little ball called the earth..

And then we are spinning around another ball called the sun.. And then on top of that we are spinning around another thing called a center of a galaxy...

And then to top it off we are all in a galaxy spinning around in a circle like a bunch of idiots around other galaxies..

This is so much fun... Let's go out and see who can synthesize protein the best in our muscles and see who can create the most gravity escaping force on the earth and then we will call it a world best..

Because the person whos body can synthesize the most protein and force it into the muscles the best is the winner.

talk about mixed relays! I got this e-mail today:

<<This reminds me of something that was done in 1964 in So Cal. To promote the Olympics that year, the So Cal track community in conjunction with a number of organizations put together a big relay event at the Riverside Automobile Race Course. This was a 2-mile loop course. My track club, So Cal Striders, took part along with other track clubs.

Teams were somehow formed so that the leadoff leg was a race walker. It was a 2-mile leg (one lap). The next several legs were a series of runners (sprinters, middle distance, distance) negotiating different distances. The next leg was bicyclists doing 5 laps. The next leg was motorcyclists doing maybe another 5 laps. Then came a series of automobiles with the anchor leg being formula 1 race cars (Ferraris, Lotus, etc.).

It was a real rodeo. My team was leading for much of the race until a screaming Lotus nipped our anchor Ferrari at the wire. The crowd loved it.>>

The one thing you need to take away from it is that even if the original post might have led you to think so, the column was not a list of wacky ways to change the sport. The whole thing generated by the sad fact that the sport's fanbase is getting old and dieing and not being replaced by youngsters. A good recipe for the death of a sport.

I therefore said that i might not like the new sport, shaking it up appears to be essential. Then a list of suggestions that MIGHT spark things up a bit for the younger demographic.

Anybody who says the sport ain't broke and doesn't need fixing just isn't paying attention to the sad reality.

If the sport is trying to cater to a younger demographic, do the youth actually want to see these types of changes (or other changes)? Most (all?) of the people making the decisions in the IAAF are probably closer to, or above the "average fan age". So how could they know what people half their age would want? Has anything been discussed regarding how to actually determine what the target demographic wants as opposed to coming up with changes that they think they may want?

I asked because, age wise, I probably fall right into the younger demographic that ideally would be targeted but I'm not very intrigued by changing the sport/shaking things up as suggested. But on the flip side, I'm not a casual fan and closer to the "hardcore" end of the spectrum so not necessarily in the wider group of youth that ideally are trying to be targeted.
