  • Regionals and no TV

Just a note that even though the Regionals won't be on tv, I did get to see the National Spelling Bee on ESPN twice last night, and once was even during prime time.

Brains should always be valued over brawn.

But more to the point, it doesn't take an Einstein to note that it takes one guy with a handheld camera to produce a TV show from the Spelling Bee (or billiards, or any of a number of things that people like to compare track to).

To do a track meet you need multiple cameramen with fixed camera positions, talent (and I use that term loosely) for commentary, a production truck, a stadium which meets stiff lighting criteria, etc,. etc. In short, many (or many-many) thousands of dollars.

Hey, I bet it would be real cheap to do a televised broadcast of the grass growing in my front yard. Does that mean that it will be on ESPN this weekend?

I'm glad somebody shows the spelling bee -- those kids deserve some attention -- but if we can't beat out curling for TV time, we might as well pack it in.

And yes, being a native Texan, I have absolutely no appreciation for ice-based sports. :-)
