This is the one race i will drop everything to see, would camp outside what ever track that race at for weeks just like a star wars geek just to see it. The race i am talking about is when Hicham El Gurrijui races Halie Gebressalie in the 5,000. This is the race of the century in my heartfelt distance oriented opinion. These guys are both great El G at the mile, 1,500m and the like and Geb with everything that he runs. The really seemed to be avoiding each other indoor which was a relly big bummer but they both ran fast in the 2mile with Geb getting the nod on that one. But for El G this is a huge jump event wise for he has been the master at all things miler (metric or otherwise) so i hope he does all right moving on up to the nickle. He said his first race will be this summer and his goal is Worlds and Geb hasn't made reference to them racing at all but when they do, it will be crazier then when Webb rann 3:53. I will be pissed if they use rabbits.

Re: El G vs. GEB
Geb probably hasn't mentioned it because he's not scared of El G at 5K. Geb uses rabbits in his fast races, but El G seems to rely (too much) on them. He does one thing, and one thing only, REALLY well: run rabbited 1500s and miles. Yes, he has run REALLY fast for 3000, too. But the 5s another step up, and it's very familiar territory for Geb. I've never seen Geb get rattled. El G sometimes does, if he's out of his element. That's just my opinion.

Re: El G vs. GEB
I agree. Geb is a great kicker -- El G is not. I have no doubts that El G can run under 13 minutes for 5k. His 13:47 as a teenager and his few forays at 3000 meters and two miles have been remarkably successful and show that he can move up in distance relatively easily. He ought to be able to approach the 5000 meter times of milers like Komen, Maree and/or Al-Sief. However, Geb is not invinceable anymore, and he isn't running nearly as fast as he once did. He has even been outkicked. But multiple rounds should reduce any advantage the younger El-G might have in a GP type time trial, and Geb has more experience winning championship (kickers') races.

Re: El G vs. GEB
Couple things. If they are going to race at 5K, they better do it soon. Geb is not getting any younger and at the sppeds these guys are running, losing half a step could be fatal.
While I agree about El G and his bunnies, lets remember than Geb is the one who said after his first marathon, when he finished third, that he wouldn't run another one with top-notch guys again. What is that?
I don't think that either of these guys are really racers, they are runners. The difference is Ryun vs Liquori in the Dream Mile. One could run fast, one knew how to race fast and win, evern though he didn't have the talent the first guy did.Joe Lanzalotto
