  • NB Boston IAAF World Tour

Let this be THE thread for this 1st REALLY important meet of the 2016-2017 INdoor season!
Event-by-event, here are the major players, and my take on what might/could/will happen!
    (In order of the schedule!)

    Men's HJ
Donald Thomas is the big name here.
    Can he jump 7-8---at least?

    Women's Junior Mile
Nevada Mareno and Kelsey Chmiel are the ones to watch!
A low 4:40's time is possible!

    Women's 800
Lynsey Sharp, Mariya Arzamasova, Habitam Alemu, and Charlene Lipsey are good!
BUT--for me, the most exciting names are Iulia Stepanova---because she's the Russian whistle-blower---and is a RUSSIAN competing in an IAAF event!!
And Sammy Watson---who just broke the HSR for 600---is here too!
In a race guaranteed to be FAST, can she FINALLY take down Mary (Decker) Slaney's most venerable HSR of 2:01.8---dating from 1974??
    Watch her!!

    Men's 300
Vernon Norwood, Gil Roberts, and Calvin Smith will face new Pro Noah Lyles here!
I'm thinking Lyles could WIN----AND set an Age record too!!

    Women's PV
    Jenn Suhr! Enough said?
Not when Ekaterina Stefanidi is here too!
Not to mention new Canadian Record holder Alysha Newman and Mary Saxer!
But watch too what youngster (and Suhr protege!!) Erica Ellis does!
    She's a HS Frosh!

    Men's Junior Mile
    DJ Principe is here---but don't expect a sub-4 here!
There is no real competition for him, and I'm not sure if he'll have a rabbit!

    Women's 300
As with the Men's 300, a Pro youngster is here---Candace Hill!
    Her first 2 races produced a 36.86 and a 37.00!
But she'll have to deal with Courtney Okolo (!!), Shalonda Solomon, and Jessica Beard!

    Men's 600
Duane Solomon, Donavan Brazier, and Michael Stigler might be a bit more motivated after the recent WR!

    Men's LJ
Fabrice LaPierre is the big name here!

    Women's 60
English Gardner, Octavius Freeman, Jeneba Tarmoh, Dezerea Bryant, Kamaria Brown, and Candyce McGrone!
Methinks we'll see a World Leading time here!!

    Women's 3000
The promoters are making this a Shannon Rowbury vs Helen Obiri race!
But watch for Leah O'Connor, Stephanie Garcia, Sifan Hassan, Dominique Scott, and Nicole Sifuentes!
    A sub-8:30??
VERY doable---and if Rowbury runs NEAR that level, the AR is in dire jeopardy!!

    Men's 60
Jeff Henderson is a big name here!

    Men's 3000
I hope this is a fast race!
We have Dejen Gebremeskel, Eric Jenkins, Paul Chelimo, Garrett Heath, and Lawi Lalang!
And what about 800 guy Clay Murphy??
What can HE run at 3K??

    Women's DMR
This WILL be a World Record run!
    I've said a 10:23 is POSSIBLE!
Meg Bellino and Taylor Dutch of Flotrack say a time "between 10:30 & 10:36" is possible!
Emma Coburn, Syd McLaughlin, Brenda Martinez, Jenny Simpson!
As great a DMR line-up as you'll ever see!!!
(Watch for the NB team--the big foursome is running as the USA All-Stars!--to run maybe in the mid-to-high 10:40's---at best!)

    Men's Mile
    Centro is here!
But so are Ben True, David Torrence, and Hagos Gebrhiwet!
Gosh, Centro might actually have to RUN this race!!

BTW, I'd thought about doing a Boston Preview in my blog!
    But decided against it!
    So I put it here!

I expect Suhr to win easily. Not sure what kind of form Stefanidi is in, she attended Akron and Reno but did not jump, which makes me think she probably isn't exactly in 5.00 meter form right now. Which is fine, it's still only January... Newman looked really good in Reno and I was not surprised she followed that up with a 4.65 jump, maybe we'll see 4.70 here!

          What happened to my post?

          I'd written----

          GEORGE Bannister???
          Jeez!

But I was right about Noah Lyles winning the 300!
          No age record, however!!

          The earlier comment disappeared!!
So the above is slightly paraphrased!

Very disappointing meet so far. Okolo barely under 37 seconds, Solomon DQed and a slow 1.16+ 600m...

So far, this has been a DULL meet!
I mean, this is an IAAF World Tour meet!
Shouldn't marks here better marks everywhere else?
                Nope!

We had a WR and Collegiate Record 600 today at Penn State!
We had a HSR in the 60H!
We had Collegiate leading marks at Arkansas!
We had fast times in nYC, including a CR in the Women's DMR by UO!!

                But this meet?

                Relatively slow times!
Suhr out before making a height!
Solomon DQ'ed for a stupid mistake!
                A 4:00.97 HS miler upset!

Let's hope that DMR team doesn't drop the baton!!

for crap's sake. Why is it surprising that athletes are not in top form at the end of January after an Olympic year? If you go to a baseball game in March expecting a no hitter you are bound to be disappointed.

You're spot-on about track, but when it comes to no-hitters, I've always thought that convention wisdom was that early season in MLB actually produces the most no-hitters because it takes more time for batters to get their eye back than it does for a pitcher to be at peak efficiency. I could be wrong, of course.

Suhr was injured on her first jump and stopped jumping after that.

With no World Indoors this year, athletes' long-term goals revolve around Worlds in August. I wouldn't expect to see the same caliber/depth of marks that we do in World Indoor years.

One interesting takeaway is that Obiri will not be running the World XC this year. Surprising, considering she crushed so many people on cross in the past month or so.

I also agree with NotDutra & PVP's comments above about what one might really expect from an early season meet this year. Further, at least for some of the athletes I am following, this was the season opener. With that noted, for me, some interesting and strong results, including:

Rowbury: Her 8:41.94 is a season opening (last race: Brussels 5k, September) 5+ second PB at this indoor distance, which she has raced enough for this PB to be meaningful. Her previous PB was 7 years ago, at this meet. Seems like a very encouraging start to her 2017.

Likewise for Obiri, for whom this is also a season opener (but as noted, she has been racing XC), this is her career 4th sub-8:40 indoors, but the others were run a bit deeper into her indoor season, and in her indoor PB (8:29.99) she had the benefit, so to speak, of chasing G. Dibaba during her WR. (I also am surprised to read that Obiri is not going to contest WXC, as she seems ready to compete for the win there.)

For Andrew Butchart, his 7:42.97 season opener (but maybe he has been racing XC, I can't recall at the moment) is by scoring tables his best performance ever, rated slightly above (by points, not significance) his 13:08.61 PB 6th place finish at Rio. He is now 4th on GBR all-time indoor list at this distance, and one more good meet would give him a good chance to move up to #2, behind Farah. Seems like he is starting 2017 well.

Seemed like a pretty good meet to me. Moreover, as an added treat, it brought to mind the great career of one George Bannister. When was the last time any of us thought about him? How soon we forget the great ones: Freddy Bikila, Jeff Ryun, and all the others.

ps. The month in major league baseball that has produced the most no-hitters is September. I am sure some baseball theorist --- whoever is the Alfred Einstein of baseball statistics and history -- has theorized the reasons for that one.

Did she really say that? She's been running XC this season and she was quoted last week thus: "I just can’t wait for my maiden World Cross Country. I have never taken part at the event but I am focused.”

Hellen Obiri defeated an Olympic champion for the second time this month in claiming victory at the Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country Championships in Thika on Friday (20).
