  • Trey Cunningham, new U.S. hurdle star

prep fans may have noticed national record 7.49 in the 60H over the weekend by Trey Cunningham (Winfield, Alabama)

That's also superior to the World Junior Record.

    He's not 19 until August.

He looks like he could maybe be pretty good in the decathlon, too.

What other events does he compete in?

You do know those were 39 inch hurdles, NOT the Intl height 42's?
The HSR for the 42's is 7.85!

you do know that the official Junior Records are over the 39-inch (and metric equivalent height) hurdles, right? Apparently not.

Trey Cunningham is the Alabama state high school champion in the 300 hurdles (and 110 hurdles), 60 meter dash, 400 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and the triple jump. He has a good shot at going to Stanford next year. If he could learn to vault and throw the shot, discus, and javelin; who knows?

                You're right, I don't!!
I ignore "junior", "youth", and "masters" stuff!
                Trey's 7.49---for me---is the HSR for the 39's!
Any other "record" he got I just don't care about!
                Sorry!

He looks like this year's edition of Grant Holloway.

Throwing things is always a problem for our decathletes. Even Eaton was relatively weak in the throws compared with his other events.

So basically no particular reason to believe he would be a good decathlete.
He's just the same as any talented hurdler/jumper/sprinter type.

You're free to care about what you want to, but it's not helpful when you confuse others by conflating your ideas with reality.

T&F is supposed to be the simplest of sports!
Who runs fastest, jumps highest, throws farthest.
And yes, records are the sports lifeblood, IMO.

BUT....you also want to keep the record books as simple as possible!
That's why I have totally separate lists & records for INdoors & OUTdoors!

But in the US HS system, there's all sorts of differences between men's & women's events.
Girls use the same weight implements from Frosh year in HS through the Pro's!
Boys use the 12 pound SP and 25 lb WT in HS....for the most part!

To add other weights to this just complicates things!
Thus my ignoring such weights as the junior & youth stuff that Jacko Gill was breaking all those records from a few years ago!

I suppose for a non-American, such "odd" weights matter more!
"Foreigners" probably ignore our 12 pound SP etc as well!

But I guess it comes down to personal taste & preference too!
For example, I LOVE the Two Mile!!
                          Few others agree!

When the World and American Junior (aka U20) Championships are contested with 39-inch hurdles, that's the height that matters, plain and simple.

cant see why we shouldnt keep track of more races (600m and 300m come to mind) and more implement sizes. It does the sport no good to be rigidly fixate on 7.62 kg shot and ignore all other shot records, why would we do that? Jacko added a great deal of energy to the sport a few years back. Dont let "complications" be a hobgoblin for your mind.
