  • Genzebe in Doha 800--Time?

    A tweet from IAAF just announced Genzebe Dibaba will face Caster Semenya in her 800 debut in Doha's DL!!
    What time will---CAN---she run??

    I can see anything from a WR of 1:52 to something like 1:56.
    I can't imagine it will be tactical!
    But even if it is, I think she'll break 2:00---easily!

    No word of a pacer, or the time they want for the first lap!

    ADD: The tweet actually was from Athletics Weekly, but included a link to the IAAF article!

      She might make Semenya work harder than she's used too.

        her speed is gone

        in '15, i think i got estimate of 1'54+, but i need to check that

        nowdays, after poor indoor times despite a 5'23 which wouda been nearer low end of 5'15 - 5'20 range in '15 indoors, unless she has re-discovered her speed, 1'57+ woud be good going...

          I doubt she'd enter against Semenya unless she felt pretty darned fit.

            With a PR of 2:00.62 en route during an indoor 1000 this winter, I'm looking for something in the 1:56s, assuming a rabbit doesn't somehow cock up the pacing.

              I think it could be one of the fastest female 800 of the last years... I too think Dibaba wouldn't debut in a 800m if she didn't feel too good. Considering she closed a tactical 1500 in 1.57 I'd say we can expect at least 1.56-7 from her. Semenya has yet to run fast this season (still in the 51.high 2.00 range) and I think Genzebe will follow whatever pace the pace-maker will do. Track and field needs these match-ups.

                that was quite way out

                i reckon in '15 when she ran 3'50-flat of atrocious pacing by chanel-definitely-not-number-"5", she couda gone 3'48-flat

                her speed was likely ~ 54-flat ->

                ( ignore the estimates of 2k & above as running those of primary 1500 training & 1500 is definitely her hitting-zone )

                54.0 / 3'48.00 ->

                1'55.13
                2'26.79 !!
                4'06.08 !!
                5'11.40 !!
                8'02.75 !!!
                13'57.43 !!!

                she can't get near them because she is always training for primarily 1500 & even despite 3k & 5k indoor WRs, her current ability is maximal at 1500 & her 2k - 5k were run off 1500 training, similar to hicham who had 3'26 but didn't crack 12'50 despite a gold at 5k

                it's just women's 2k - 5k times are p!ss-weak apart from 3k, because chinese women didn't run 2k or 5k in '93 or WRs wouda been << 5'15 & < 14'00

                her current outdoor shape in indoor season possibly

                54.5 / 3'53.00 ->

                1'57.01
                2'29.48
                5'18.97
                8'16.02
                14'23.58

                my mistake

                it's not her speed that has gone but her endurance

                her basic 400 speed likely has only drifted out by 1/2s from '15 but her endurance has gone down the toilet, despite 2k wr

                make of it what you will...

                  I'd reckon that is 100% correct assuming peaking for a big clash.
                  She needs to go back to 1500 & try only 800/2k as only below/above.
                  She needs to forget 5k, except for London where she might as well try for a "loose" gold if Ayana is tired after a hard 10k if perhaps that Kenyan gal who ran 30-flat en-route to 64'50 enters 10k.
                  That gal probably couda run close to 29-flat that day on the track, so Ayana is certainly not even best intrinsic 10k gal around !!!

                    Dibaba is going to win this one.

                      Ah, this should be fun! I have to think Semenya will step her game up, and push Dibaba to a sub-1:58.

                        Early season, so probably 1:58 mid. Also depends whether Semenya is willing to push the pace or not.

                          Or it could be the opposite. Maybe she doesn't feel fit enough to run a great 1500 at this point, but thinks a loss at a distance she doesn't normally run won't be that big a deal.

                            Losing to Semenya in the 800 is not as damaging as losing to her in the 1500.

                              Losing to Semenya in the 800 certainly won't be a big deal, but even if Dibaba has a really bad run and finishes last, it can be dismissed as a one-off outing at a non-specialist distance. It won't ruin her reputation, affect her AOY chances, etc.
