This is the most significant win of Herron's career, and re-confirms her among the best female ultra runners (50-100km variety) in the world right now. Her first try at Comrades (2014) resulted in a DNF. In 2015, she won two prestigious international ultras, Winschoten (NED) 100km and the IAU WC 50km (held in Doha that year); last year, she raced few ultras and none outside the USA. She is the second USA woman to win Comrades (after Ann Trason 1996, 1997).
On the men's side, Bongmusa Mthembu (RSA) -- a career ultra runner with lots of Comrades experience -- now joins those who have won the race more than once, and to have won both 'up' and 'down' courses. With this 2017 victory he now has the two victories, a total of 4 'podium' finishes, and 6 top-10. His Comrades career record:
(31st)
(46th)
(7th)
(4th)
(12th)
(2nd)
(DNF)
(1st)
(16th)
(3rd)
(1st)
