I've dug around the USATF website and TFN message boards but have failed to find information about the designees for the London relay pools. Direction to the documentation or the actual information will be appreciated!

Every year the POOL is generally the same. Approximately the top 6 in the 100m and 400m are in the pool.
But the pool is very different from who actually runs. Anyone who is already in London in any event (from Tianna Bartoletta and Jarrion Lawson to Michelle Carter and Ryan Crowser) are allowed to run on the relay.

Make it a mixed relay and bet we can sell it to the IAAF.

USATF used to like to give the impression that eight or so runners who be "invited" to run in a couple practice meets before the WC and then the best foursome would emerge along with the two subs they inevitably would use (espcially if it is an Olympic year). Now, the team is self-selected and the top four have selected themselves and are in unless they de-select themselves by not showing up for relay camp.

Originally posted by DJGA clear and transparent selection process so that everyone, athletes, coaches, agents, etc and fans, know how the team is determined, how they will execute their exchanges, and when they will have two practice meets with competition.
If first four in the trials is the way USATF wants to go, then make it their policy and state it.
Entry via the relay pool must include the 4 entries in the corresponding event. So unless you wish to replace as an entry one of the first 4 in the trials (Gatlin, Coleman, Belcher, Bacon) then those are 4 in your relay pool. So you have two other possibilities. They could be vets or newcomers. When it comes to declaring a relay squad to declare for the event itself, they could also use anyone already entered in the meet in another event but the men don't have anyone who'd logically fit (such as Bartoletta for the women).
So what you'll end up with is at least 2 of the top 4 at the trials and maybe a couple of the alternates running in the event. That's not a ton of flexibility.
