  • National Record Decathlon

Inspired by aaronk's pitch for the Decastars as a meaningful meet concept, I started pondering how countries' National Records in the 10 decathlon events would stack up as a decathlon.

So, here goes with an event-by-event comp using standard decathlon scoring tables (https://www.usatf.org/statistics/cal...EventsScoring/), and indoor records if they top the outdoor.

    100m
Jamaica opens brilliantly, scoring 1202 pts, with the USA in second on 1174. Like JAM, Trinidad and Tobago are sure to fade, but they're in third for now on 1141, with Canada 4th on 1136.

    Onto the LJ
USA hits a lead they're never going to lose on 2496 points. Jamaica fall to second on 2374. South Africa leap onto the scene with 2354 points in third and Cuba emerge in fourth with 2348 points. Also above 2300 are:
    GER 2341
    GBR 2322
    AUS 2314
    FRA 2301

    After the SP
    USA 3781
    JAM 3647
    GER 3632
    RSA 3577
ITA 3559 (somehow missed these guys first time around)
    GBR 3527
    RUS 3518
    AUS 3498

    CUB 3496

    7 more events to come

    ITA 4741
CUB 4740 (big mover due to 2.45)
RUS 4720 (2.41 puts them past GBR)
    GBR 4699

CAN 4678 (knock AUS out of top 10)

I'll be back tomorrow with the second day...

Feel free to debate the flaws on the decathlon scoring tables ad nauseum...

It occurred to me ... Kenya was a strong 2nd on both the medal and placing tables at London, but will have a hard time here ... aside from the jav and 1500, I think.

Cuba is going to make a strong run for the bronze. They don't have the depth but I think their NRs across the board will compete with pretty much anyone.

South Africa going to be surprisingly difficult to catch in third whereas think Jamaica must plummet on second day.

Very interesting and other than top 2, not what I would have guessed! Already thinking through heptathlon rankings...

clearly something goofy when WvN's 400 WR is only the fourth best South African NR of the day!

does using the IAAF's "regular event" scoring tables change things much?

I suspect they will fade eventually. Strong in the 110mH and Discus but not so much in the PV, Javelin and 1500m (from memory).
