  • Women nations’ ranking 2000-2018.

The two twin threads about rankings of nations per their NRs in the 10 events of the decathlon (men) and the seven events of the heptathlon (women) while interesting did not gave an answer to the rankings of nations in T&F. For example, the decathlon/heptathlon have a huge underrepresentation of middle/long distance events (one of six) a fact that causes the powerhouses of Eastern Africa to be outside the running.
So, me being myself, I decided to examine other methods to rank nations based on the performance (time wise) of their athletes. Using the IAAF annual list in the years 2000-2018 I assign points based on the athlete annual rankings. Of course, the big question is what method to use to assign these points that will be able to capture both the quality and the quantity of each nation. I used two main points systems that are used in other sports.

    1. The F1-Grand Prix (that gives points to the top 10)
    2. Alpine/cross-country skiing (top 30)

The following table presents an example for the 100w in 2003.
Rank Time Name Nation Top10 Top30
    1 10.86 GAINES USA 25 100
    2 10.89 STURRUP BAH 18 80
    3 10.93 EDWARDS USA 15 60
    4 10.97 FERGUSON BAH 12 50
    5 11.01 ARRON FRA 10 45
    6 11.03 THÁNOU GRE 8 40
    7 11.04 LEE USA 6 36
    8 11.05 SAFRONNIKAVA BLR 4 32
    9 11.07 BAILEY JAM 2 29
    10 11.08 COLANDER USA 1 26
All the athletes lower than 10 will get 0 point according to the top10 method, whereas according to the top30 method, the athletes ranked in places 11-30 will get a declining number of points. I used another three point systems to ensure the robustness of the results Top3 (5,2,1) top40 (based on biathlon point system) and top75 that simply gives 1 point for each athlete in the top 75 places. I intend to do it for all the years and all the events (for women only) and if people will find it interesting I will post the main results.

The table below presents the results for the 100w. To simplify the presentation of the results I scaled every system to a total of 100 points, so basically the number of points is the percentage of all available points that each country got. In the example below, the USA had 5,156 points out of total 13,466 for a total score of (5,156/13,466)*100 = 38.3
Note, that the order is based on the top30 rankings
    Country Top30 Top10
    USA 38.3 36.7
    JAM 24.3 29.8
    BAH 6.8 8.7
    NGR 4.4 3.8
    TTO 4.2 4.8
    CIV 2.9 3.6
    FRA 2.7 2.6
    BUL 1.9 2.1
    GRE 1.9 2.9
    RUS 1.4 0.1
The USA is in first place in all methods except Top3 when Jamaica is taking over. The number of points is stable and fluctuate between 33.1 – 38.3 As for Jamaica their points is decreasing the deeper we go, but still ranked second even in Top75 (which basically examines how many athletes each nation has in the top 75). Russia has the largest difference starting with 0 in Top3 moving to 0.1 and 17th place in top10 all the way to 4.9 and third place in top75. This suggests that although Russia failed to produce world class sprinters in the 100 they still continue to produce a lot of second rate athletes.

My inclination is to not go very deep because that limits the smaller countries.

I decided to combine the two measures into one (simple average). So here are the results for the three sprints.
