The two twin threads about rankings of nations per their NRs in the 10 events of the decathlon (men) and the seven events of the heptathlon (women) while interesting did not gave an answer to the rankings of nations in T&F. For example, the decathlon/heptathlon have a huge underrepresentation of middle/long distance events (one of six) a fact that causes the powerhouses of Eastern Africa to be outside the running.
So, me being myself, I decided to examine other methods to rank nations based on the performance (time wise) of their athletes. Using the IAAF annual list in the years 2000-2018 I assign points based on the athlete annual rankings. Of course, the big question is what method to use to assign these points that will be able to capture both the quality and the quantity of each nation. I used two main points systems that are used in other sports.
1. The F1-Grand Prix (that gives points to the top 10)
2. Alpine/cross-country skiing (top 30)
The following table presents an example for the 100w in 2003.
All the athletes lower than 10 will get 0 point according to the top10 method, whereas according to the top30 method, the athletes ranked in places 11-30 will get a declining number of points. I used another three point systems to ensure the robustness of the results Top3 (5,2,1) top40 (based on biathlon point system) and top75 that simply gives 1 point for each athlete in the top 75 places. I intend to do it for all the years and all the events (for women only) and if people will find it interesting I will post the main results.
