Guess we have to ignore Jim Ryun's times (since they were out of season !).

UC Irvine lists Steve Scott's school record at 3:36.1 from 1977. Not sure why Scott doesn't appear on the all time college list.

Was UC Irvine D1 at the time? TAFN only counts D1 athletes for its "collegiate" records.

I can't find where and when that was run however I assume that it was out of the collegiate season. For some perspective, if all collegiate runs from all college athletes (from all countries) were taken into consideration, Scott's 3:36.1 wouldn't be close to being in the top 10. It may not even be in the top 20.

edit: easier to find than I first thought. His 3:36.13 and subsequent (1978) 3:36.0h were both run in August. Even before the Mt. Sac race last night, Scott was not in the top 25 all time collegiate performers regardless of when the race was run in the year.

OK. Irvine was still a D2 school in 1977.

Steve Scott was 2nd in the NCAA in '77 and won in '78.

D2 people could qualify to the big nationals in those days
