Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
Wow. While I realize there are no guarantees that they won't hire the same consultants who made NBC's coverage so godawful, I am tentatively very happy to hear this. I was only a kid, but I do remember how much better ABC's coverage was back then. And with ESPN and ESPN2 at its disposal, ABC could do a great triplecast (hopefully better than the NBC/CNBC/MSNBC joke). Let's keep our fingers crossed."Run fast and keep turning left."

Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
when ABC was doing it, it was a totally different cultural era...
ABC has access to all the same focus groups NBC has...
even watching SportsCenter..you see the results of their focus group...
whose the market, young adult male, still forming viewing allegiances...
and cultural predelictions for that group varies from the JUST the STORY MAAM content of early days ABC.

Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
Sorry to burst your bubble, but ABC isn't the answer. All TV was better "back then," and ABC has been in the forefront of making it worse. Who do you think invented the "up close and personal" concept that has forever ruined sports? (all of them, not just track) Thank you Roone Arledge.
No matter which network does it I can guarantee you that track will feature tight camera work that makes it impossible to see what happens behind the winner, we'll get lots of cutsey background stories and we'll continue to see almost nothign but sprints and middle distances. As it was in the beginning, is now....

Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
ABC still did the best job of covering the Olympics. Hope they get the nod. It was probably the people though that made ABC's coverage of the Olympics so great. Think they should keep the up close and personal segments. Don't think they ruined t & f at all.

Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
I'll still watch it on CBC no matter what US company gets it. Their annuncers are just as bad, but at least it's live and they will show literally two or three times as much. Unless, of course, I get a satellite dish and watch it on BBC or Eurosport . . .

Re: ABC Makes Pitch To Get Olympics Back
all the major outlooks package the Olympics the same way.....
..if you're looking for substance, the primary vendor won't be giving it to you...
still, there's the tendancy for the multi channel viewing, so the possibility for more t&f exists..
nbc has msnbc and cnbc and telemundo to go with the nbc stuff....
just turn down the sound...
with 2012 possibly being in nyc, start saving now and go to it live.

Other than Tom Hammond, who does a lot of other sports for NBC it's safe to say that no matter who gets the Oly bid (or any other meet for that matter) you're going to have the usual cast of suspects (Stones, Rawson, Lewis) very much in the mix. It's easier for the networks to go out and pick up these "trained" people than to start from ground zero.
