  • Athletics World Cup

I received an e-mail yesterday from "[email protected]" announcing the "Athletics World Cup", to be held July 14-15 in London Stadium. This is not to be confused with the IAAF Continental Cup, to be held September 8-9 in Ostrava. The Continental Cup goes way back, to at least 1977, although I think it was called the World Cup. I remember Evelyn Ashford beating Marita Koch in the 200 meters, and Koch smashing the WR for the 400 (47.60) in Canberra in 1981. The last Continental Cup was held in Marrakech in 2014, and you can still see articles about it here:

Europe won in Marrakech, from the Americas, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

But this is different, being a competition among nations, not continents, specifically the top 8 nations based on scoring in the 2017 World Championships over the World Cup events. Since the longest running event in this meet is the 1500 meters, Kenya and Ethiopia are excluded, the eight countries being the USA, UK, Poland, Germany, South Africa, Jamaica, China and France. Events to be included are: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, sprint and long hurdles, 4x1, 4x4, and ALL the field events, even the hammer, which doesn't get included in the Diamond League. It will be conducted over two evening sessions. Tickets range from 10 pounds for juniors in the nosebleed seats to 155 pounds for the "VIP" sections.

The event will take place right on the heels of the Rabat DL meet and end five days before the Monaco DL. Just a week later, the two-day Muller Anniversary Games (London DL) take place. Of course, the big question is how many of the best athletes in these countries will compete.
