In speaking with one athlete who competed in the track town series in San Francisco and NYC this individual said those were some of the most enjoyable meets experienced by that person and that a number of others agreed. The hospitality was outstanding and it was said that the team atmosphere was genuine.
Not 100% in agreement with the TTSS concept---"team" scoring, with the "teams" with athletes with NO connection to that city---but I LOVED the idea of a new meet, and the fact they were scheduled close together in time---thus filling a "gap"---a gap that GH & others have often complained about!!
Also liked the "team" aspect in the throws----where the genders took turns in the ring, then added their numbers!
(Did I get that right?? LOL)
As far as the ATL, the best part of that was Lolo Jones taking center stage!!
LOL
I will say, I went to the NYC leg of the summer series and because of the way the teams were configured, the mixed relay that ended the meet was extremely exciting!
The USA definitely needs a pro 'summer circuit' for those who are just under the Euro circuit standards (or elites looking for some domestic tune-ups). I was hoping one of these two concepts would succeed and grow. USATF needs to keep encouraging meet directors.
Contrary to what many people have said here, team competitions are not the saving o T&F. They have their place, but it's an individual sport, and that's always going to be the dominant form of competition. Look at the most successful individual sports, tennis and golf. The Davis and Ryder's Cups have their fans, but they're by far not the most important or popular competitions.
The American Track League meet in Houston prior to the Olympics in 2016 was probably the coolest meet I've attended as an adult. (outside of Oly Trials, of course).
So much access to athletes. So much free beer. So many great races. Centro vs Murphy 1K!
Cheerleaders? Not so much...
Sadly, they do nothing of the sort. If they don't own the meet, it gets no support or PR from Indy at all. Self-serving mentality that has helped to kill every attempt to build a product in the sport.
