  • High School Field Event Finals

I don't work many HS meets now a days but worked Oklahoma Meet of Champions yesterday..top three medalists from six classes of HS.. fun meet, enjoyed it..quite a change of pace from Big 12 last weekend.
Inevitably, two of eight finalist (Jumper #3 and #8) were competing in the HJ (at far end of field)
As I recall, in olden days, just as NCAA, HS rules required finalists to jump/throw in reverse order of performance established in prelims. I was besieged by HS coaches, some arguing for unlimited reshuffling, some for jump in order/time foul.
In desperation, I turned to the HS rule book and found a slightly convoluted rule that finalists could jump out of order, but, as I read it, only earlier but not after their standing. But, the leading jumper, #8, still gets last jump and does not have to jump until all other jumpers have taken all their jumps.
No problem for #8 but #3 could only jump before #1 and #2 in rounds 4,5 and 6, which was a problem with them being 200 yards away, six girls fidgeting for their turn and we gotta get this done and start the boys LJ.
Just wonder how HS coaches and officials come down/handle this .

This does come up a lot. The key, even at the State level, is to let everyone get all their jumps, if at all reasonably possible. The problem I've had is when someone other than the leader after 3 rounds, wants to jump last. I find that an unfair 'advantage' and avoid it at all costs. It happened once to me, and sure enough, the kid in 3rd passed the leader on the last jump. Never again!

I was not and none of the coaches seemed aware of the " jump earlier but not later" provision. #3 and #8 took all three prelim jumps before going to HJ. We waited ten minutes after the other six finalists completed six rounds for #3 and #8 to return and take three jumps. Neither improved. Inexplicably, the flight sheets for this event were seeded best to last qualifiers. #8 was first jumper in competition and won on her first jump.

It has never happened at a HS meet that our daughter participated in but she qualified for the SP and JT at the IAAF youth champs a few years back that started within 10 minutes of each other. The officials told her that the order had to be preserved. She ended up passing a couple of attempts and did a lot of shoe-changing but it is possible.
