Assuming Rupp wins Chicago a real attraction would be Rupp and Kipchoge going head to head on the Monza course in real race conditions....rabbits but not interchanging.

I think so too...I'm just thinking of something that could get Kipchoge back on that course again.

                '61 HS Boys AOY:
1961 (tie) Tom Sullivan (St. George, Evanston, Illinois) 800/mile
(tie) Ulis Williams (Compton, California) 400

Are there lists of best ten performers and performances for paced and unpaced marathons? Similarly, are there world best / world record progressions for paced and unpaced races?

I guess you'd have to go very deep down the all-time list to find a time achieved in an unpaced race.

Yes indeed Sullivan's great 4:03.5 at Compton...breaking the high school boys record by 5 seconds...

                      • In terms of World Record progression for unpaced marathons we have both of Bikila's Olympic titles. Its probably easier for someone in the know to come up with WR progressions. The hardest of my questions would be ten best unpaced performers and performances.
Actually, I guess that paced marathons are a fairly "recent" phenomenon.

In that respect in the case of unpaced...the greatest is Steve Jones at Chicago in 1985..on his own after 2 miles....1:01:42 at the half, only 36 seconds behind Kipchoge's split, 1:35:22 at 20....still a great split...he slowed down a bit...the last few miles were on Lake Shore Drive right on the lake and he had no idea how how fast he was running....he only missed the WR by 1 second.

                          • Jones' time was great back then, but as of today, it's only the 471th fastest of all time.

Weltklasse Zurich Aug 13, 1997 had 3 WR's in one night. Men's 800 (Kipketer); Men's 3000 SC (Boit Kipketer) and Men's 5000 (Geb). Was lucky to be there that night and will never forget what happened.

                              • For me, the greatest unpaced marathon is Wanjiru's 2:06:32 in the unspeakable conditions of Beijing '08.

(I suppose i might argue that it's also better than any paced marathon!)
