Perez 67.78 in round 1 of qualifying! Robert-Michon showing her championship pedigree once again with a big SB of 64.02.

Perez is one of my favorite throwers to watch. So athletic and powerful.

No drama from Perković this time; 65.20 Q in round 1. Caballero, OTOH, starts with a foul.

Was it WC or last Olympics that she (perkovic) advanced the final with 3rd shot, after failing first two?

It was in the last Olympics that she started with two fouls in qualifying, and then did the same in the final en route to taking gold. I think that wasn't the only occasion when she struggled in the early rounds.

Big PR 2nd through by American Laulauga Tausaga to advance. Her teammate Val Allman from the first round sits in 12th at this point.

I think Tausaga has a lot of potential. She could eventually battle for throws medals like Michelle Carter has done. When I met her, she seemed to have a lot of fire and a fearlessness that could take her far.

So 3 Germans, and two each for Cuba, USA and China. Nine of 12 from four countries. Seems like that must be a little unusual.

I noticed that there was only one junior athlete in the entire field, Jorinde van Klink (NED), who was born 7 months before the Sydney Olympics.

She came in with a PB of 61.33 set at the Dutch U-20 championships at the end of June this year and finished a creditable 9th in GroupB for 18th overall with x 58.58 x.

So what you say? Well, her IAAF profile shows that this year she also set bests in HT 58.15, the day before her DT PB, as well as SP 17.76 at the beginning of June.

But here's the clincher, she also set a LJ best this year of 5.67 on the same day as her HT as well as a windy 5.68 at the start of September - now that's unusual!

                            Klinken

She was, I think, the favourite for Discus gold in this year's European U20 Championships but crashed out in qualifying. However, she redeemed herself by winning the Shot Put title later in the meeting.

She won bronze at the 2018 World U20s in the Shot Put.

She's a big lass so that LJ is pretty impressive!

Klink? Yeah, even after copying her name from the results, I still managed to lose some of it during editing. That's a special sort of incompetence. Yay! I'm special!

I did see the 49m(?) DT bomb out and subsequent mediocre levels but I assumed that she had sacrificed junior competitions after her PB, WC qualifier to go back into heavy training for Doha.

I didn't see anything on her height/weight but I am impressed that her 3k shot was mid-19s, so she should be able to hit that as she gets stronger. I think women have a fairly good 3-4kg conversion compared to men's 5kg/12lb-7.26kg/16lb.
