It's also number 3 in the UK apparently (behind Smith and Jones). I also think it's common in Jamaica.

Pretty easy to to do a search on the WC website. There's 10 of them.

Go to the IAAF site (which now automatically redirects you to the WC site), select the 'Athletes' tab and type 'Wang' in the search box.

              I have found the following:

              10 Williams (4 USA, 3 JAM, 2 GBR, 1 Barbados)
              6 Wangs (all China)
              5 Smiths [+4 hyphen-Smiths (e.g. Asher-Smith)]
              5 Thompsons [+1 hyphen-Thompson]
              5 Browns
              4 Jones [+1 hyphen-Jones]
              4 Ivanov/Ivanovas* [+1 hyphen-Ivanova]
              2 Johnsons [+1 Johnson-hyphen]
              Only 1 Taylor (Christian)

Also 2 Schmidts (the German for Smith), 1 Schneider (German for Taylor), 1 Braun (German for Brown but actually Dutch) and 1 Johansson (Swedish equivalent of Johnson).

*Ivanov/Ivanova is the Slavic equivalent of Johnson.

And the most common name in Madison County, KY. For obvious reasons, we were careful in selecting dates.

Not surprising at all, the impacts of slavery are vast. Throughout the West Indies there are many surnames that are dominant on each island. Which are from the U.K, France etc.
