  • Biggest beatings in track & field

The following things are the biggest beatings at track meets, in no particular order:

    1. 78 heats in the 200.
    2. PA guys who excitedly inform us that an athlete's mark qualifies him for regionals...after introducing said athlete with a better mark before the event.
    3. Race walking...enough said.
    4. Spending 12 hours at a big invitational meet...and who won? No one! No team scoring!
    5. Race walking
    6. Carol Lewis
    7. Breathless post-race interviews.
    8. Time trials instead of real races.
    9. Having the media treat any race that doesn't produce a world record as a dissappointment.
    10. Larry Raltson..."Now imagine going to your local high school track..."
    11. Did I mention race walking?

    Others?

narrow-minded observations. It should matter most how they raced, not how they finished. The tactics should be between the coach and/or the athletes.

Youth track meets run by the parents who should know the rules. You hand can't be in the pit as your body goes over the high jump bar.(height 3'2). Letting their kid scratch by 2" and saying it is good but another kid goes over by 1/4" and it is a scratch. Almost as bad as little league.

Leave the hand-holding to Runners World. NCAA champs shouldn't need such namby-pamby displays.

So you're saying that if 2 runners are even as they approach the finish line, one should purposely slow down to let the other guy/girl win? Now, that's not right, that's not giving an honest effort.

So winning & losing don't matter? Because the winner is determined by where he finishes.

No they shouldn't. They also shouldn't slow down to hold hands and try to tie. They should run their guts out to try to be first.

Lighten up, dude. On with the point of this thread:

The biggest beating in track is meets that last all day and don't give you a winning team. Make meets shorter and score them!
