  • USA Junior National Decathlon

Does anyone know for certain what type of implements\hurdles will be used? The USATF website says they will be using junior implements, while Kilmartin has said he is attempting to break Craig Brigham's national record with Senior international implements. Since this appears to be Kilmartin's last attempt at the accepted HS record, it would be a shame if he doesn't get the chance.

Kilmartin's request to USATF to use Senior implements last year was denied (god knows why).

He has made similar request this year. I had heard RUMORS that it was being viewed in a more friendly manner this time out, but have not heard any final resolution.

If he were to get it, would Kilmartin's deca mark be viewed as a HSR, even though the official high school season is over?

It is a non-standard event, and most High School kids can't prepare for a deca until after the season. Brigham's mark however, is the mark every High School decathlete considers the record. It has stood forever it seems, with rare challenges. And Kilmartin is no cinch to get it. He did 7,100+ last year with international implements, and 7,400+ with junior implements. Senior implements generally subtract 250-300 points from the score (depending on what type of hurdles were run). The key to Kilmartin getting the record is not his prodigious Jumps, but what he can do with the heavier implements.
