Houston McTear's 100 meter time

In early June 1975, I 'll have to research the exact date, Houston McTear then a junior in High School ran a 9.96 100 meter time in the U.S. Junior Championships that was NOT WIND-AIDED. Im' curious to know why this isn't recognized as the national high school 100 meter record? Does anyone have any information.

Was he too old to be considered the HS record holder? He was ... a lot older than most highschoolers from what I remember. Maybe he was on the E. African calendar.

I thought he was still 18 or had turned 19 after the beginning of the 1975. If possible check any Knoxville, Tennessee newspaper archives. Im' thinking it was June 5th, 1975.
Regardless, I'd like to see McTear get his props. If he wouldn't have pulled up in the 76' Olympics trials finals he would have demolished the world-record in that race. Thanks for the reply.

Fastest HS time I can find for McTear is 10.16, not 9.96.

I know for a fact it was 9.96 unless it was converted or something.

I'm going to guess it didn't happen -- at least it wasn't a legal 100m. If you look on the all-time lists for 100m at www.iaaf.org, McTear isn't on it. The slowest time on the list is 10.02. If he had run 9.96 in the '75 US Juniors, wouldn't it show up on the world list?

It was probably 9.96 handtimed.U can add .25, if thats the case.

He was famous as a top World indoor sprinter
holding the first electric 60m World record
in 1978 (6"54).
I read in the early eighties he had some drug
problems, trying in vain a come-back in 1984.
This athletic pocket sprinter is typically
representative of the damned US sprinters through
the seventies like Steve WILLIAMS, Harvey
GLANCE or Johnny JONES who were super-talented
athletes never giving the impression to have
ever reached the limits of their respective
potentials.

If T&FN doesn't have it on their lists, then it didn't happen, at least not legally.

I found the results of the Jr. Nationals that year. It was in Knoxville, June 13-14. In his prelim he run his best time of the year, a 10.0 hand time. You must have seen his hand time in hundredths (which they often reported as a legit time). His best auto time was only 10.28 for the year. I think this is mystery solved.

A kid from Iowa named Adam Huluska ran a 10.1 wind-aided 100m last year in a meet. It was hand timed and he had almost a hurricane to his back. The Iowa High school Athlete association gives him credit for the record. What horse crap that is. The kid is playing college BB now. At the state meet last year he won the 100,200,400 and long jump. What a a total waste of track talent. Besides the Drake Relays, track in Iowa really stinks.
