What wicked finish? He's had a wicked finish in one race. That was his Pre race two years ago. In that race he was an 'underdog' and on a roll. In those situations some people perform better than they would when expectations are higher. Even in the USATF 1500 in 2001 he didn't have the snap down the straight that he showed at Pre. That was attributed by some to be a sign that he had reached the end of his long season. It just may not be there at all.
Webb is also never in position to make any kind of move at all. Why he wasn't told to stick to Lunn, the most savvy of the 1500 runners, and try and kick with him I don't know. Maybe he just can't do it.

The hell with that........ I say PILE THE PRESSURE ON and let him deal with it - that's what he asked for, isn't it? You don't just drop out of college after a crappy freshman season and turn pro for $250,000/yr. and expect your life to be devoid of pressure!!

I guess Nike is second guessing their contract, and Webb is second guessing not staying at Michigan and maybe he seems like a bust now, but I agree with the post that he's still young and he can have a great career if he's patient. Let's climb off his back mow, before he just quits because of the burdens of expectation.

That took place in 2002, not "last year".

"I think you all are in for a big freakin surprise this weekend. Webb will not only make the world team, but he will dominate. He will win and set a championship meet record, mark my words. He's been preparing all year for this moment and his workouts, so I've heard, suggest that he's in 3:32 shape. He'll win AND get the qualifier this weekend."
I bet this guy wishes he had that one back.

the united states 1500 meter runners should just concentrate on competing in the final, then go to europe to try to get the qualifying mark. oslo would be ideal for a fast time, but i read on this message board, oslo is not planning on a 1500/mile race this year. i hope oslo decides to have one.

He's still young he's got a while. My opinion on the situation is that a lot of it is mental/lack of confidence. I believe he's in tremendous shape but I don't think he's got the confidence and such to pull off what his body can do. I noticed at Pre, he even let a little gap form from time to time with him and the pack throughout the race. I just think he lacks the confidence for what ever reason. If you read the book, Sub 4, you get the same impression. Some of the workouts in there were unbelievable for a guy who "only" ran 3:41.x that year in the 1500.

It doesn't look good for Webb and the rest of US milers.

I just read yesterday's USA today and found out that the world championship qualifying standard for the 1500m is 3:34.90. Only Krummenacker has the qualifying standard so far. So unless Webb or the other US milers run at least 3:34 this weekend it is pretty much an irrelevant event.
If 3:34.90 (3:53.90 mile) is the qualifying standard for the World Championship this year all I can say it is going to be a small field made up of mostly African runners. Countries like England and France will also have a hard time finding qualifying milers for this years World Championships. To the best of my knowledge no Asian milers will have the times to qualify.
What was wrong with the 3:37 standard last year?
Having the qualifying time at 3:34.90 is a little brutal. I quess it is going to be a very small field in this years 1500m championships.
I guess Webb's lackluster performances this year is the least of US milings worries.
GO Krummenacker!!!!!!!You are our only hope!!

Webb is fine - only "mistake" he made was running 3:53 in HS instead of 3:59. Now many expect a linear progression from 3:53 to 3:49 to ???. It just doesn't work that way. The guy is still v/young.
All talk of his "mental" status are silly as well. Anyone who has competed knows the mental follows the physical. He isn't there physically so his confidence is not thru the roof now. Bet if you ask him how confident he is about tommorrow he would say not very - ask him about next year and he will likely smile.
For a reality check - who are the next 3 youngest men to make the finals in the 1500, st, 5000, and 10,000 this year?
