Re: They Don't Make Movies Like That Anymore

What about that Kris Kristoferson(sp?) western disaster which name escapes me right now and my damn dial up is too slow to check out. Actually PB wasn't even good enough to be included with such classic disasters. It isn't even worth arguing about.

KK, don't know. Considering he's a Rhodes Scholar, he sure found himself cast in some really bad ones!

Heaven's Gate was the movie I was thinking of-Cimino's Waterworld and Ishtar.

In all seriousness, "Heaven's Gate" is a contender for my all-time top 10 list. I recall when Siskel & Ebert reviewed if when it first came out and they described it as an unintelliglbe mess and the clips they showed only backed that up. So, like everyone else, I stayed away in droves.

Then 4-5 years later I read somewhere that instead of the (rough numbers) hacked-up 2-hour version that had been theatrically released, British crowds were eating up the original 4-hour version. So I rented it. And I now own the DVD.

Stunning cinematography, killer soundtrack, panoply of major stars, great heroes and villians (even if drawn a bit broadly). You need to sit down on a long evening with nothing else pressing and just drink in the whole thing. I think you might be surprised. Then I again I might not, because I've tried to turn many people on to it and most get lost before the first half-hour scene of the Harvard graduation is over. If you thought the run-in to "Deer Hunter" was long....

I was talking about the original release in the context of big budget flops like Ishtar and Waterworld. Guess I should get the long version. I am assuming that Godfather I and II are on that top 10 list?

Wow - I must have missed 2-10! Gotta look in Blockbusters today.

Is that Colonel Plum, the Clue character or Colonel Plum, the civil war vet law dude? Or are they one and the same?

Re: They Don't Make Movies Like That Anymore

My vote for the worst movie to ever spawn a sequel would be "It's Alive". The premise is that babies are suddenly being born as monsters (so far, not too much of a stretch) who are immune to pollution. Saw this one in a theater with a friend who had a twisted sense of humor. When a scene came on featuring a police officer saying "...Tracking down and killing babies is not exactly my line of work." he nearly wet himself laughing. The rest of the theater then assumed it was a comdey and enjoyed it. (Think "The Producers" here.)

A few years later, the sequel was released. It was absolutely too bad to even laugh at.
