Major props to Pappas for the big PR - 8784. Puts him in the medal hunt for sure. Clay's 8482 in second is an excellent result also. Although the depth dropped off rapidly in the field, the Paris team is sound. Go USA Decathlon!

Re: Decathlon Day 2
i think those guys have always been great, giving their heart out in the most complicated event in the sport, they truly deserve to be called the world's greatest athlete. i dont think you have to be a decathlete to appreciate those guys, they have to train for 10 events that are really so different from each other.

Re: Decathlon Day 2
sebrle will still be the favorite, but pappas overwhelmed everybody in the indoor meet he could do it here again. he even went over 60 m in the javelin and drop to 4.48 in the 1500. i think he can do a little better in the hurdles (13.8) and the disc (48 m), then he definetely has a chance.

Re: Decathlon Day 2
like my reply to 'Javelin' topic, I think Decathlon needs a billionaire benefactor - a Bill Gates-type track fan who'll put up lotsa $$$$ for any 8500+ decathletes. Olympic champs are set for life, but what about the 4th-placers?
Hope Paris Decathlon comes down to the 1500m - and commentator informs us of how many seconds must separate the gold & silver medalists.(when was last time that happened? Rome 1960? Tokyo '64?)

Re: Decathlon Day 2
Pappas' hurdles in the World Indoors was worth 1033 points. The mark for those points outdoors is 13.55. I wouldn't necessarily look for 13.55 from him, but 13.75-13.80 seems possible. It looks like more points are also available to him in the DT and JT. He may have been conservative in the JT because of his former shoulder injury--and I don't blame him (that may affect the DT also). But a couple of years ago he was looking like he would be a 220+ javelin thrower and maybe he will be. I doubt if he's stopped improving! That was a great first day at Nationals and a great PV.
