    Re: Darkwing RIP

Faculty and staff have access to two large timesharing systems at Oregon, "oregon" and "darkwing" (thank you google)

<<Darkwing is a large shared Sun Unix system running Solaris 2.7 (Sun's version of Unix). Darkwing is used for email, web browsing and publishing, and scientific/numeric applications. Accounts on Darkwing will also work on the Alphacluster (see "Other Systems," below).>>

I still have some t-shirts that were produced by one of the subscribers. Remember Ryan Grote and the annual Grote polls?

As a lurker on t-and-f I remember a Kurt Bray with encylopedic knowledge. Does he ever come this way?

I believe Charlie Mahler of Gustavus Adolphus, a Div.III school in Minnesota, was the originator of the list before someone in Eugene (I forget that name) got the University of Oregon to agree to host it.

I seem to remember it was hosted at Williams College before getting too large for their server. Was that after Minnesota?

Who was the most prolific amateur "poster" during the long course of darkwing existence (gh, stones, and other "pros" who make a living from T&F don't count)? Could anyone re-post their favorite all-time darkwing post here (for those of us who are too young to know). RIP old brother, RIP.

<<UofO used to use Donald Duck as their mascot. Then Disney decided they needed money for the use. After 50 years or so. >>

One minor correction. Donald is still the official mascot of the UofO. My understanding of the latest agreement is that the UO may still reproduce Donald on its merchandise, but only for sale within the State of Oregon. That certainly limits the reach for sales, so Donald isn't pushed as much as he used to be. But the mascot on the field, riding the Harley before the start of each home game, is still Donald Duck, green sailor suit and all.

I think Geoff Hutchison of Williams set up the archive for the list, but was never the host.

If he does, it is with a handle. My guess is no.

Looks like Letsrun has closed down too.

Weird - normally the Olympics brings more discussion and lots of new interest to these kinda things.

While that certainly has been the rumour, it may just be that the server is just temporarily not available. It's a regular occurrence.

if letsrun goes away, good luck, gh and bh, their 'delete' keys will have to be replaced on a daily basis.

It seems anyone can log anything, anywhere, without the censorship risk on letsrun. I:m not sure that is a good thing. I:ve actually seen tfn posts in their fullness mysteriously end up on letsrun as original statements!

Censorship is a bad thing, but unless we are willing to accept pornography, willfully fallacious defamation, and other acts of 'free speech' the line must be drawn somewhere. This site does it as well as any I've seen. Letsrun - not so much. If indeed letsrun has shut down, there will probably be an 'adjustment period' as some of them try this place out, but many of them will not end up here. Other 'hipper' sites will emerge.
