Darkwing RIP

This has been discussed on several threads, but I'd like to go on record, thanking the darkwing moderators for many years of valuable service. It's on its last legs now - the last 5 days had but one message, and it was a 'test'. It's going out with a whimper, but that's not a fair way for it to meet its maker. I lurked for most of its existence, either as a direct subscriber, a digest subscriber or just visiting the archive (that was the easiest, since I never felt like posting anything).

It provided us with a great results service and debate forum. There was less civility there than here, but there were more impressively credentialed posters (IMO). Until D-W-I-G-H-T finally quit, he had some great posts.

So, hats off to Darkwing, we hardly knew ye. Thanks for the memories.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is/was Darkwing? I've heard it mentioned a lot have never found it.

You know what is funny about that though. There are still 683 subscibers as of a few days ago. The digest had 489 the last time I looked but that was quite a while ago-pain in the ass to subscribe, check and unsubsribe. Even in its heyday, only a small % on darkwing posted and most lurked. Many of the darkwing posters(although I don't know where the heck this tafnut guy was posting(or doing) before) are now posting here and I suspect, based on the bandwidth usage during the Olympics, many of the darkwing types were lurking. Many of the same guests, different house.

If it's any consolation, the Canadian T&F mailing list is dying a slow death too. Those Canucks! Always copying us.

MJD- you know what the peak numbers were? I think there were a couple thousand subscribers at one point or another (web and easy Internet access was still in its infancy).

US T&F list. Here are some of the most recent posts. The term "darkwing" is embedded in the email itself. Someone else will have to explain where that actually came from. Must be the UO listserve name or something.

That sounds about right. The reason I remember is because the Canuck list has been a steady 300 all along and I remember thinking that, relatively speaking, we had a bigger list.

Hulk, if you knew anything at all about working with numbers, you would know that is not an accurate statement.

darkwing has to refer to Darkwing Duck, Daffy Duck's alter ego. U of O are the ducks, so some toon fan decided to name the listservs (there's tons of them) after the toon character.

UofO used to use Donald Duck as their mascot. Then Disney decided they needed money for the use. After 50 years or so. Peking duck anyone? Darkwing, if it is truly a Daffy Duck alter ego, would be an approprite usage, WB, not Disney. WD, now there is a bad man.

LOL! Indeed. For whatever reason the list required more stingent standards than the IAAF one. Kept out a lot of potentially good discussions.
