It behooves the IAAF power structure to toss these tiny bones to places which have votes when it comes to keeping them in power. Staging an affair like ths gives great pride (seriously) to multiple countries in that part of the world and they will not have forgotten that the next time IAAF elections come around.

Note that while next year's version is scheduled for Edmonton (Rockies road trip!), there's nothing yet in place for '06; last I heard, the whole concept was up in the air.

A story on the IAAF site said they were considering holding the world champs in conjunction with one of the existing commercial half-marathons in the future.
It might be a good idea, too. I remember when the 1991 London marathon was the World Cup as well - it ended up being one of the greatest fields ever assembled (certainly in terms of depth).Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...
