Re: Talence Decathlon - Day 1

<I don't think there are any females trying to springboard their way over 5'9" hurdles>

I said "hurdlers", not "hurdles". You are comparing apples with oranges. Women can compete in the previously so-called "men events", no doubt. There must be a recognition of anatomical differences. Hurdles should be lower, implements lighter. While I am at the implements, I believe women shot should be 5, not 4 kg.

I'll ;-) to that. The sooner they implement these changes the better. Maybe Asterisk would care to weigh in on this one.

btw - you didn't think I was calling for 42" barriers for the women? Yes the hurdles should be lower, I don't think they should be 9" lower, when the differential between average male and female heights is 5". Again, we need to SEE whether women can do it, not merely speculate about it. Aren't you normally in favour of empiricism ?

Mea maxima culpa, actually I did. I don't think we have an argument here at all. Shucks!

I am sitting beside my piano while I do this, btw. Not completely idle:

The women's score is pretty meaningless as of now. I won't really care at all about the women's decathlon until they run a 110m hurdle and score the events the same. There's no reason there shouldn't be a direct comparison between men and women in the dec, there's one in every other event. There's no adjustment of the 100m times for women, you compare the time directly to the men.

Clay and Karpov should have some great duels over the next four years. They are young C-24 K 23, fast, and both are learning to PV. If Karpov can get a handle on the jav, he will be tough. Proably, Sebrle will be a factor at Helsinki, if he dosen't retire. But a WC is the only hole in his resume, so I expect him to try again. Pappas seems injury prone, but if he can get healthy, he has the talent. Big if.

Very strange marks. The 100 to start was very slow, and not everyone ran into a wind. The wind seemed to move from 1.1 against to 1.6 behind.

Then Clay loses by 100 points, but Sebrele only ran 4:51! Clay just runs a 4:40 something and he wins this thing. The scores were also very low. Anyone have a clue, other than it being so late in the season, why?

Judging by the pics on the IAAF site, the weather looked very grim:
