  • Chinese 'GP Final'

Although this meet certainly doesn't represent the very top competition for them, it is apparently an important one. Look where they are now, and compare to where they'll be in 2008 and I bet you'll see a huge difference. I predict another breakthrough for them ala 1993, only more widespread this time - and a lot more long-lasting. I think the sleeping giant is about to wake for good.

What is it about these times that suggests another 1993 "breakthrough"? What this suggests to me--yet again--is how absurdly anomalous those '93 times were.

A lot of those marks wouldn't even win college conferences here. In 2008 I think that China will battle the USA for most medals in track. They have the numbers and now they have the motivation. Just as the East Bloc used sports to communicate their system's strength, I think China wants to promote their nation's emergence as a preeminent world power through athletics. Four years is avery short time to bootstrap a national program, but their closed society is the perfect place to do it, and all the athletes see how Liu has been treated since the OG.

You might say they certainly have NOT gone full circle.
