This is going to be an exciting race, especially for the American males. I’ll assume that the ones listed here all show up fit, recovered from their Olympic or OT exploits or mishaps, and psyched to run. If the weather’s great, all will go under 2:12 and two will be under 2:10.

Kastor will run under her PB.

    Agree or disagree?

Kastor is obviously in the shape of her life, but I think a 2:21 so soon after the Games is perhaps asking too much. Fast times are not out of the question in NYC on a good day, but it's not as fast as some of the newer ultra-flat courses such as Chicago, so I'd say it's unlikely.

But who cares?! New York, at least since the early 80's, has not been about fast times, it's about a great race in the media capital of the world. If an American wins, regardless of time, it'll be big news.

will galen rupp make an attempt on paul gompers american junior record? also recently the top americans have been running chicago instead of ny, this year with the exception of khanouchi more top americans seem to be running new york.

I'm a little worried about the recovery of Meb, Browne, and Kastor, too. That could be the only crimp in what should be a great race.

I definitely believe that the third place American male's time will be better than the third place time at the OT: 2:12.02

I think the biggest question will be Browne especially since he suffered from pretty bad cramps late in the marathon. What is Gompers junior record? I remember reading about him all the time in the late 80's early 90's then he seemed to just disappear. I know he had some pretty tough injuries and was studying at Oxford I believe, but really just seemed to disappear. My prediction is that Kennedy will make the big move, motivation and rest will really be in his favor. The others will be trying to just revamp from the Olympics.

Galen Rupp is not entered in the 2004 ING New York City Marathon. Alberto hasn't mentioned to me that Galen is contemplating a marathon anytime soon. I'll admit, that would be pretty interesting.

Re: Recap of ING NYCM Elite Athletes Announced

with the elite marathons, they say entries close on a certain date, or like boston there is an irrelevant qualifying standard. if a proven runner like k. bekele who has no previous qualifier calls after the deadline for entry. a race director would be crazy not to let him run. would an exception to the rules be made in that situation?

Of course there are exceptions for elite runners!

Unlike back-of-the-packers, elite runners can debut at Boston (i.e. don't need to qualify).

                        One notable exception for NYCM

Someone named Grete without any credentials over about 1500m was given a spot several years back...
