Re: Gold Medal vs World Record??

I think I'm with Kuha here. To me it depends on the event. Nils Schumann can keep his Gold, I'll take Kipketers record. If I had a choice between winning HJ Gold in Athens and beating Sotomayors w-rec I'll go for the 2.46 jump. How about being the one who ultimately beats MJ's 1932?

Re: Gold Medal vs World Record??

I'm sure Marc has his reasons for assigning the weighting as he did.....but there's something about setting a WR that is incredibly special. Olympic gold medals are guaranteed to be awarded in the Olympics, WR's are never guaranteed.....for that reason alone I appreciate the WR more than the medal.

        Gold medal
There is a difference between racing and set up events for world records.
Some people are good at one and some the other, a few both.
        Racing is the real deal.

Re: Gold Medal vs World Record??

If someone ran faster for 5,000 that
          >day, then why were they not the gold medalist?

Except in the case of Nurmi, I think '28. He was not selected by Finland, so on the day of the final, he ran a time trial on a nearby track, and his solo time dusted the winner's time in the actual race. "-). I have read of this more than once, but it is possible that it's another urban legend. I certainly wasn't at either site.

          Edited for:
I guess I'm with the majority here, OG gold is more important than WR. In Kipketer/Schumann case, Wilson missed at least one OG and WC due to nationality shift, so perhaps he is happy with the WRs. I guess he has no choice, really.

Just remember, Wheaties doesn't give a **** about World Records by themselves!

              since 1990:

how many athletics gold medals have been issued in the OG ( count each relay as 1 gold) ?

              since 1990:

how many WR's have been broken in outdoor olympic athletics events (with or without PV for women) ?

                To answer your questions:

                A. since 1990: how many athletics gold medals have been issued in the OG ( count each relay as 1 gold) ?

                179 (including 96 men's + 83 women's)

                B. since 1990: how many WR's have been broken in outdoor olympic athletics events (with or without PV for women) ?

                185 (including 92 men's + 93 women's which includes ALL events)
                139 (including 92 men's + 47 women's which excludes wos PV)
                120 (including 92 men's + 28 women's which excludes wos PV and wos Hammer)

Conclusion: Since 1990 T&F WRs are more rare than Olympic T&F Gold medals (if you exclude either the wos PV and/or wos Hammer)

                    WoW !

                    i assume figures are correct

                    even with the lowest figure for WR's - 120, that's 120 WR's in 15y, which is on average 8 /year !

it may be the brain-syphilis kickin in, but i don't usually recall there being so many !

                    any breakdowns per event ?

Re: Gold Medal vs World Record??

Well, on the woman's side, there are several new events with many WRs, like the vault. In addition, there is the "Chinesse aberation". Other than that, on the Woman's side the number per year is pretty low.

Note, are you counting Indoor WRs (except the new definition for HJ etc.)? I am sure that RJ would trade her 1500 record for a Gold metal (or another real estate commission?).

Re: Gold Medal vs World Record??

The numbers I'm giving here and above are for outdoor only WRs set since 1990 (and only for those event contested at the Olympics). I've not included indoor WRs.

                        Breakdown as follows:

                        Event - # of Men's WRs - # of Women's WRs

                        100 - 6 - 0
                        200 - 2 - 0
                        400 - 1 - 0
                        800 - 3 - 0
                        1500 - 3 - 1
                        5000 - 7 - 4
                        10,000 - 9 - 1
                        Marathon - 4 - 6
                        110mH & 100mH - 2 - 0
                        400H - 1 - 3
                        Steeplechase - 6 - n.a
                        4x100 - 6 - 0
                        4x400 - 3 - 0
                        20k Walk - 7 - 4
                        50k Walk - 4 - n.a
                        HJ - 1 - 0
                        PV - 8 - 46
                        LJ - 1 - 0
                        TJ - 3 - 5
                        SP - 1 - 0
                        DT - 0 - 0
                        HT - 0 - 19
                        JT - 11 - 4
                        Deca & Hep - 3 - 0

You can see the bulk of the women's world records came in the PV and HT. Also notice the lack of women's WRs in the sprints (including relays), SP and DT post-1990. Pre-1990's Eastern Block athletes and FloJo rewrote the books in those events.
