  • Huge spectator sports that people never actually did

    What sports can you think of that attract large numbers of fans who never actually played the sport. Here's a few;

Hockey (I know they're in trouble but go to MSG and see the number of secretaries in the crowd on their company's tickets.)

All Motor Racing especially NASCAR. Do you guys in the States have any idea how huge Formula 1 and Rally racing is in the rest of the world?

Horse Racing (The bet is the attraction)

    Tennis (my opinion)

What else can you come up with?

Dog racing's pretty big over here, and few fans have tried it.

Howzabout boxing? Don't know too many people who have actually laced up the gloves and have stepped into the ring.

Where is here? Out here on the left coast there is no (or essentially no) such thing.

Boxing might be another sport where the fan/participant ratio is high. (Edit - cross posts with the one above.)

I hear it can be big at some of the New England universities.....

Ireland. I'd assumed most people knew by now.

            >Boxing might be another sport where the >fan/participant ratio is high.

Been there. Done that. Got the bloody t-shirt.

I've won sprint races, road races and xc races. Tried the TJ and the HJ, a half-marathon, boxed (or been boxed, to be more accurate), karate, and a Superstars competition. Add in the usual team sports (soccer, GAA, basketball, volleyball). Add in Chess and even a spelllling competishun...

In retrospect, I shoulda concentrated on one thing (could never work out what it was). Too late now. But at least I'm in good company: Skeets never won Olympic gold! (LOL)

I suspect everybody on the board has tried their hand at this one, and has the DMV points to prove it.

I haven't gotten a speeding ticket since the day in 1995 (in my 5L Mustang) when the policeman said I had a problem that needed addressing.

                'I am a speedaholic - it has been 9 years since my last ticket . . .'

So what are your pr's? Mine is 130 mph on the 15 (I15 for NoCals) to Vegas from LA.

My PR for tickets is 145, but that was kph in Canada. A pair of 90mphs stateside.

For speed, 95 in a VW Beetle (downhill - it was a VW Beetle, after all - out of the Smokies), 105 in a Honda Civic, 120 in a BMW 5 series. I could go faster in the BMW but I got access to this car - it actually belongs to Mrs. bad hammy - late enough in my life that I am not that interested in pushing it to its limits.

PRs are relative when it comes to the automotive world. It's not my ultimate speed record, but for a PR I would hold up breaking 100 for the first time in my father's 1952 Dodge..... on a dirt road and at a time when cars didn't have seat belts.

100mph in a '73 Captain America Ford Pinto going down a long hill into Clemson all loaded up with mine and Jav star Stu Ralph's stuff. I could hear Scottie screaming in the communicator, 'Captain, she can't take it, she's breakin' up!"

None of those fans ever got put into a sleeper hold.

Got my latest in August. Most of my speeding tix have not been for really fast speeds, usually 90, negoiated down. The only place I have driven 100+ is on Nev fwys. In Europe, Mary does the driving (actually she does most of the driving, she likes to, and is better at it than I), but we have always rented budget cars, so really can't get much above 120kmh. Even on the few time I drove.

I think we had a ballot inititive several years ago here in CA regarding "letting the puppies run" but it failed.

I would guess that many spectators at NFL games never played at any level. Especially among the female portion.

104MPH in a Volvo 740 (must be a record for that type). I also did 92 in a fully laden Volvo 940 estate (9 up plus a roof box). No wonder I blew the head gasket! :-(

Got two tickets (one for 70 in a 60 zone), but no points.
