Lets see, Seb,Steve,Crammy all sort of gradually faded after injs. Noradine kind of disappeared after El-G became #1. Peter Rono maybe the worst gold medalist at 1500, vanished . So El's probably trying to find retirement with honor.

So I infer that none of those mentioned retired with any honor . . .
Then I am a dishonorable fan, because the aforementioned were all fellas I looked up to as athletes - during the good, the bad, and the exceptional times. To continue appreciating them - even after their "declines" - is wrong?
Could it be today's athletes who are at the very top have the financial "luxury" to determine how they will go "out in style?"
Is El-G a more precious commodity (appearance fees-wise) if he goes out this way?
It's always been about the money; the older guys mentioned faded and burned out because it was their last chance to grab any money (one way or another); at the same time, today, you have stars in minor events hanging out way too long.

Geb's at the very top of the world from 1500m to the marathon, while Aouita was 800m to 10000m. Geb had won world titles from 1500m to the Half-Marathon, where as Aouita won world titles at 1500m and 5000m, and a medal at 800m.
Geb's Titles:
1500m: 1999 World Indoor Gold
3000m: 1997, 1999, 2003 World Indoor Gold
5000m: 1992 World Junior Gold, 1993 WCH silver

it's worth pointing out that el g has never bothered with

El G did run 800m & 1000m races in '95...so without trying to be too picky, that was inside ten years...but I don't think since then he has had a serious attempt on those distances...
I like to see him run in an 800m...his finishing 800m split from Athens showed he must be capable of around mid-1:44 to 1:45 in an open 800m...
Prehaps he should try an attack on that magical 2 Mile WR of 7:58.61 by Daniel Komen...

You really think that El G could have possibly run a WR in the 1k?
2:11.96 by Ngeny is pretty tough...but I think Ngeny should have paced himself more for the final 200m. His 800m split was 1:44.62, and his final 200m were run in 27.34...did he die in the final stages, or should a 27+ finishing 200m be expected after an 1:44+ 800m?

i get a rough figure of high 2'11's for el g in his 3'26.00 days, but looking at noah's figures, he should have probably gone low 2'11's with better pacing ( & still have the WR )
