i was watching classic track and this guy broke the word record with a 7' 7" jump but it was the way he was jumping that was so odd. he led with his left arm facing the bar and jumped it over that way, wut ever happened to that method?

Hmmm, that is a puzzler, because Dwight Stones was the first over 7'7 and he has a very orthodox flop style. Are you taliking about a straddle jumper, who goes over on his belly? Or a flop jumper with a left approach, i.e. left arm leads? Pat Matzdorf, 7'6.25, had a bent knee straddle that looked different. The straddle died because of the physics involved, usually less speed in approach, and a different center of gravity over the bar. The flop harnesses more of the jumper's power at takeoff.

      Re: high jump

the jump was 7' 6 1/4" to break the american and world records. he would go over leading with his left arm and get lvl with the bar on his belly and flip his knee and body over.

Does Yashenko (sp?) hold the straddle record? And the height? I was watching a Bacelona '92 tape today and saw a decathlete straddle 7'6".

Yeah, Yashchenko, 7'8" straddle as a teenager, elsewhere on these posting boards a guy who jumped against him describes Yash as the greatest talent ever, superior to Sotomayor. Injuries and/or high living apparently cut short his career. So, how many straddlers cleared 7'6"? Matzdorf, Ni Chi-Chin and Yashchenko for certain... I dunno who the decathlete in '92 might have been. Did Rolf Bielschmidt get over 7'6"? Brumel came within 1/4 of an inch (and, maybe, a guy named Bill Thierfelder)... and Rey Brown woulda, coulda, shoulda, and Joe Faust had near miss practice jumps at 7'7"... close but no cigar... anyone else who got official straddle clearances above 7'6"?

            Re: high jump

That was probably Christian Schenk of Germany, previously an East German. Met him at a European Coaches conference in Berlin. Super guy

              Re: high jump

I don't think any decathlete did 7'6 in Barcelona.
I believe Christian Schenk holds the Deca H.J. best at 2.27 but he did not compete in Barcelona.
Yes, Rolf Beilschmidt did 2.31 (7'7)

                Re: high jump

After Brumel died, I posted the following to the Darkwing chatlist:

<<Anybody out there got a definitive all-time straddlers list? Using what limited resources I had in limited time, I tried to dig up everybody who ever jumped as high or higher than Brumel. It's such an incredibly short
list I figure I must be missing a bunch of obscure Soviets from the early '80s who were still using that by-then-arcane style.

Big D (Dwight Stones) says he *thinks* there were a few more than I have listed here, but he can't come up with any names. Makes Brumel look pretty
                damned good, don't it?

                2.35(7-8 1/2)---Vladimir Yashchenko '78
                2.32 (7-7 1/4)---Gennadiy Byelkov '82
                2.31 (7-7)---Rolf Beilschmidt '77
                2.295 (7-6 1/4) -------Pat Matzdorf '71
                2.29 (7-6)---Chichin Ni '70
                -------Cai Shu '82
                2.28 (7-5 3/4)---Valeriy Brumel '63
                -------Sergey Senyukov '77>>

Nobody ever added to that list.

Yes, it was Schenk in the '92 Decathlon. Good call guys. I reviewed the tape and they indeed announced his clearance as 7'6". That does not mean they had the height correct of course. How big a man was/is Schenk. He appears to be easily 6'5" or taller. .

                    Re: high jump

Schenk's best was 7-5.25, set in the Seoul decathlon; he didn't compete in Barcelona. T&FN annual editions say he was 6'7", 203 pounds.

Thanks. I must be confusing him. I will pop the tape in and try again.

                        Re: high jump

Okay, I've got it straight now. Sorry for the misinformation. I watched '88, '92, & '96 trials tapes last night. If only there was a decent movie on I wouldn't spew such non-facts. Schenk set the decathlon high jump world record in the '88 olympics with a jump of 7'5 1/4". They emphasized the fact that he had 3 good attempts at 7'6", thus my confusion. Thanks for setting me straight. To again ask my question: Does anyone know Shenk's height?

On www.decathlon.ee Schenk is listed at 201cm tall ((6'7"). His HJ PR is listed as 2.27 (7'5.25).

NBC's olympic coverage said he was 6'9", thus the repeated question. Thanks for everyone's input.
