  • small man's shot put

The shot put is a big man's event, no doubt, but what if for one meet they had weight classes just like olympic weight lifting. What would be a good throw for a someone 5-7 155lbs witht the 16lb ball. Just a track and field fan who is curious. I

Yeah, and once we're at it, why don't we also organize a 100 meter race for slow guys? Not everyone can hang with a Mo or a Tim, there ought to be an event where 11-second sprinters can do well, right?

I am 5-7 about 190lbs and I recently returned to the shot put after many years off. Guess it is 16lbs now! Any way I can throw 30 feet on a good day with the glide at age 40 and 10 months. I also tried the discus(2kg). Threw 90ft 8 inches on sunday. Look out 100ft here I come.

Hey dave Powell has a point. If you dont have given gifts you just have to focus that much more and work that much harder with what you've got.
I'm pretty big, not huge and no where near the size of some guys but I bust my tail and compete to the best of my ability, which aint to shabby.

Twister, good job! Glad to hear you are getting back out there. I took some time off (almost 10 yrs) from running after competing in collge and have just started back. Forgot how good it felt to be out there working at it.

          Keep up the good work!

              Re: small man's shot put

I will be competing in the Iowa Games July 19-20 in the 100m, shot, discus, high jump. I figure I can do the 100m under :13 and high jump around 5ft. My kids are in youth track and I try to coach so I thought, what the hey, set a good example for the kids have fun and get in shape.

I think they should have race where you can't run, but just try to walk very fast. I but it would be very funny to watch.

They do have that, its called race walking. It would be sweet but they do like 5K and 10K, Its Crazy

                    Twister---
Great that you are competing! Age group competition seems so reasonable, when you are strictly matched against others in your 5-year age bracket. Unfortunately I haven't resumed going to meets since I was 42, 6 years ago....but from reading T & F postings like yours.....I'm going to bet back into it!
shot PR of 13.54 in 1994.....now? Probably 34'.

You may want to subscribe to Masters Track and Field news. It is a newspaper with meet results, upcoming schedules, ect. Last night I ran a :4.87 @ 40yds. Haven't run that fast since 1983. Finally figured out how to get a good start and get my stride down after the drive phase. Here's a good one Willie Gault ran at the Masters indoor nationals at 60m. Some of the greats are coming back(Bill Rodgers). later.

You people totally misunderstand my post. First of all I'm not 5-7 155. I'm 6-1 265 and throw the shot 57-3. My buddy is a triple jumper who's the 5-7 guy. Were always at it about who is the "best" thrower pound for pound. Just a friendly competition. Just wanted to know if there was any way to find out who is throwing to his best.

T&F is about absolute, not relative, excellence. If you throw further, you're better. There is just no reasonable way of taking all the body-type variable into consideration. I doubt anyone would want to see weight class competitions in the World Champs. Shot put for distance-running types, with 40-ft throw getting the gold? Puh-leeeze, gimme a break. If you're a small guy, you don't do SP, it's that simple. There is an event for every body type in T&F - it's about doing what you're good at.
