    RW 10-13-03
    Weekly Wrap-up
    by Marc Bloom

The 32nd Manhattan College Interscholastic Meet was held last Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx.

Victor Gras of Massachusetts and Ahmed Haji of Connecticut produced one of the greatest duels in years. The two national figures traded the lead in the hills and were virtually even when Gras bolted ahead onto the long home straight. His miler's speed paid off as Gras won in a meet record 12:17.1, just off the all-time course record of 12:15.7 set in 1983. Haji ran 12:23.4. Gras is a senior and state champion from Belmont High.

Another meet record fell when Shenendehowa boys of upstate New York won their race with a 12:58.78 5-man average, erasing the previous mark of 13:00.28. New Jersey's top three teams--Mainland, Christian Brothers and Ridgewood--followed in the overall boys team standings.

    edit: 2004 Fayetteville-Manlius average @VCP 12:48.74

no one (brother of a Cal HS legend) it's easy if you think like a third grader.

      Are you ready, poopyhead?

First of all, knowing that the last four CR holders were Liquori, Sandridge, Ostolozaga and Hudson (that's right, Ritz's coach), I'd highlight those names and paste them into the Google search field.

Here's what my feeble mind comes up with:
      http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=li ... on&spell=1

hmmm. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Of course, there are some idiots who'd prefer to "rack their brains." No sense in "racking" something that's already gone, I think.

FWIW, I was 3-0 against Sandridge when he broke Liquori's record. Intense peristaltic rush stopped me with 800m to go. Ended the season 4-3 against him.

The course is like mondo these days. It would take a 12:05 to match Hudson's sandy, rocky mark.

Contact Larry Byrne [email protected]. His "Greenbook" lists all sub 13:00(2 1/2mile) and all sub 16:00(5km) times ever run at VCP. As for the course being like Mondo, there are those who contend that the crushed rock surface causes spikes to slip slightly and might actually lead to slower times.

During the '70's that course was faster on a rainy day which hardened the sand. Since it's been 'fixed' I'm not sure it is as sandy, particularly the cowpath, as it was back in the day.

BTW Mr. Byrne's booklets are great as a reference.

Obviously. That's why I still rack! (and why I still have something to wrackkk)

Anyway, that referred to trivia, not to some obscure (to us Europeans) vcp hx jjqzxxz

            Get racking, everybody!

Yes, this would be me - forever a 'no one' ... but (was) a better basketball player than he, which made me legendary in my own family, which ... okay.

No malmo in top '20'. gotta be a story there other than your implosion episode. You run VCP other times?

I seem to recall a story about Julio Meade and VCP ... but

              Are you ready, poopyhead?

              ... yes I'm ready
