  • Alan Webb's McAlpine course record broken

Deserves its own thread if only because of the former owner of the reeord. Andy Bumbalough by 11 seconds.

With a name like "Bumbalough", I don't see much of a future for this child.

I live in Charlotte and run the McAlpine course regularly as well as competed on it in high school in the state meet and Kinney regional.

14:33 on that course is incredible, especially given the competitors who have run it over the years in the South Regional and not come close to that time.

I'm sorry I didn't make it out to the meet yesterday. That run would have been one to see!

Wasn't the course very soggy when Webb ran? This is not meant to diminish the performance of the new record holder, but giving Webb his props if this is the case.

I do not know the exact course conditions during Webbs run but can tell you this:

The McAlpine course is not a grass course and the trails are well maintained (well packed) so a rain shower will not slow down the course. It takes several days of rain or very heavy rains over a period to cause the course to get soggy. It has happened but not often. (Actually the Kinney Regional meet in 1984 or 85 was the worse conditions in course history - Hard rain storm for 2 days before the race left parts of the course under water, but the course drainage has been "enhanced" since then)

But again, I do not know for sure the course conditions for Webb's run but even if it was raining or had rained the night before the course would probably have still been in good shape.

McAlpine is a classic course, I ran on it in high school, my wife ran on it in high school, I run on it with my daughter in training now and she will likely run on it in high school.

The course is a looping trail run with a large, long 800m opening straight. Each 200m is marked on the course so coaches can easily get splits if desired. The course in mainly flat except for a steep 150m hill (plus 150m down the other side) at the mile and half point. The final 600m is around a lake to the finish which allows the spectators a great view of the runners coming in. From the starting area a coach, parent or fan can see the runners at from the start to 400m+, at 2000-2200m, 2800-3200m and the last 600m.

The also have a 8000m course for local and regional colleges to run on.

Erin Keogh's women's high school record on the course from 1986 still boggles the mind: 16:45
