  • Photo Contest?

Since the track calendar concept has some problems (see "T&FN gift idea" thread), how about a different visual image idea? I emailed this one to Garry but didn't hear back, so I'll float it out here. It's winter, track's in the doldrums for awhile, let's have a photo contest to pick the alltime best photo(s) that have graced the pages of TAFNEWS. Solicit nominations via the magazine and the website. Display the top 30 or 40 in an online gallery. Vote on those online. Publish the top 10 in small size in the magazine and large format online. Vote via mail and online. Publish the top three in full-page format in the magazine and Garry takes the winning photographers out to dinner. I'll start the nominations with the homestretch photo of the Montreal 5K, with Viren leading home Quax, Hildebrand, Dixon, and Foster, everyone's face reflecting the high price they are paying to be there. A classic image.

Broaden the contest beyond T&FN print. Seek submissions of photos from ALL sources; cull out the best and post them for voting.

I responsed on the 27th, must be in the ether somewhere. Here's what I said:

<<We have been toying with idea of something a little simpler, which is to choose the favorite cover of all time. The advantage of this one is that all the covers are available for perusal on the site.

A favorite general-photo contest, we fear, would get very low rates of participation, excluding as it would anybody who is a recent subscriber, or is a longtime subscriber with either a bad memory or lacking a closet full of back issues.>>

        Good point, gh.

A favourite cover of all-time sounds like a good idea.

Would non-subscribing Europeans be allowed to participate? ;-)

But if any old geezers submitted their favorites, could they not be posted online for all to look at, or are a lot of the old photos not available and/or too much work to post? I started subscribing in 1976, but a great photo from before then still might catch my eye and win my vote. The best cover contest would be fun.

            Re: Photo Contest?

T&FN does not have any staff photographers: everything comes from free-lancers on a per-usage payment basis, so any photo that is reproduced on the site has to be paid for again. There's simply not enough traffic here to warrant that. Particularly since the traffic comes gratis.

I maintain a general photo contest, reaching out beyond T&F devotees is viable.

For example, check out this gallery and click on the XC photo: http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=3866

Great photo. No huge T&F personality, but a huge photo. Foto contests get the attention of photographer, rather than just fans. The resulting quality will surprise you.

Wait, doesn't EVERYONE have a closet full of back issues of TAFNEWS?? That's what I keep telling my wife when I have to look up who won the Zurich 800 in 1982 or some other important fact and she just stands there shaking her head.

I just wish we had some athletes with personality. Here's another bored T&F star, just in it for the money:

I was looking through the cover and noted a few that caught my eye.

I'll be sure to forward this. Perhaps TAFNEWS could spray it out to all subscribers' spouses.
