It seemed like Runyan decided to run at the last minute. Anybody got an idea if this perception is reality? If so, anybody know why?

Why do you get that impression? I think she's been planning it for months.

Different courses and conditions mean different times, I realize, but it's still interesting to note that Radcliffe's WR would have beaten Rodgers Rop!

By the way, we track fans are always grousing about how bad TV coverage is, so let me say I thought ESPN's wire-to-wire coverage was great. I wish they would snag the NYC Marathon rights away from NBC, which recently has taken to only showing a one-hour hightlight package on tape delay instead the real deal live.

Amen. The live, complete coverage of the NYC Marathon was one of the few track events shown on American TV when I was a kid. I wouldn't be the fan I am now had it been otherwise.

Yeah! You and I must be about the same age. The first NYC I watched was 1983 -- Rod Dixon outkicking Geoff Smith right at the end in the rain. Awesome! That and Mary Decker outkicking the Soviets that same year at Helsinki were the two defining moments that made me a rabid t&f fan.

Classic photo of the Dixon/Smith duel I just described (note Smith collapsed on the ground behind Dixon): http://www.global-pix.com/marathonphoto ... round.html

I was in that race. Didn't see the dual live obviously but watched the finish on a big screen about 10 times to the strains of some very loud music and fuelled by a lot of beer at the post race party at the Sheraton or some other big downtown NY hotel. Got Grete's and Rod's autograph. That finish still gives me chills. Rod stalking Geoff through Central Park while he is falling a part. The finish line just a little bit too far for Geoff to pull it off.
