T&FN men's HS Editor Jack Shepard was cruising his records the other day and has nominated miler Sam Vasquez (Flagler-Palm Coast, Bunnell, Florida) as the award winner for competing in the most states farthest from home. The 6 states Jack found that he has competed in this year so far (he'll add Maine this weekend):

Three other distance types also caught Jack's eye in this department. (This is by no means a definitive compilation; just high-profile names who jumped out. Some may even have competed in small meets in yet more states):

Walker Maria Michta is pretty far up there, and she missed the whole outdoor season due to an ankle injury. Her 2nd at USATF Jrs was on 2 weeks of training.

Actually Adam Perkins ran a low key 1500 meet in Springfield, Missouri in the early season at the Southwest Missouri State Meet. So there are six for him.

and it's a fun stat. I started thinking about the number of states I raced in during HS and then during college. Max in HS 3 (TN, FL, GA). Max in college? That'd be tough since all those seasons blend together.

Seems to me like Allyson Felix should get an honorable mention for her jetset status. This year, she has competed in California (home state), Idaho, Massachusetts, Nevada, England, Mexico, & she's in France right now for the Gaz de France meet. She might even add another European meet to her list (Austria, Italy?) then she RETURNS to France for the World Outdoor Championships. While she graduated from high school a couple weeks ago, she also hasn't begun college yet. Hands down, she wins the high school honor for competing in the furthest PLACES -- 7 & maybe 8, though not necessarily U.S. states -- from home.

Felix told the French press that after tomorrow's Gaz de France meet, her next meet will be the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic. So it's a bona fide 8 for her: California, Idaho, Massachusetts, Nevada, Dominican Republic, England, France, & Mexico. Can't beat four U.S. states & four countries. Any other candidates travel as far as eight time zones from their homes to compete?

There are probably many more high school athletes that can lay claim to participation in meets in many states--including(gasp!)more girls!

Please re-read the original post. Jack Shepard is T&FN's MEN'S high school editor, so he was checking the men's records. Nobody purposedly excluded the women.

Note also that he said Vasquez probably held the record for most states FARTHEST FROM HOME. None of the states in which he competed touch his home state.

Note that Florida is on the list and he is from Florida! Also, Florida is surrounded on three sides by water, so not including states that touch is much simpler.
