Maybe its my TV, but Maurice Greene looks too big. I'd say he is up over 185-190lbs. I believe he was around 178 when he was dominating the sprints, but I got to think that the added weight is hurting him more then helping him.

Leaner is always better, but muscle mass is critical in the 100. I bet he weighs a little less in Paris, now that he's getting beat. A 5-lb loss might do wonders. This board has noted others who appear heftier, Stacy Dragila, for one, but I sure won't be the one who says she doesn't look good.

Next time I see Stacy I'll ask her,but after chatting with her on the infield at Stanford I was motivated to tell someone that she looked markedly LEANER than in the past. Don't trust what TV tells your eyes.

Oh yes, please tell Stacy she's looking a little beefy. It would be interesting to see which orifice the 14' pole came OUT of you.

Since I made the comment about Stacy, after seeing her at the Pre meet, I'll elaborate. I've seen her in person at several top level meets and like other elite level women competitors, the visual level of body fat seems to have a correlation to their level of fitness and performance (general observation, not an absolute). A difference of 2-3% absolutely does make a difference at this level of competition. Also remember, if you are training an athlete to peak at a certain time you really don't want them to reach this "mean & lean" level too early. Therefore for her to peak in August, it would fit for her to carry a little "extra weight" in May.

As to Maurice, I have not seen him recently, so I can't comment on him, but there are several instances of sprinters gaining too much muscle for their event. It's frequently an art to find the optimal balance between strength and speed.

If you've got the eye to spot the gain/loss of 3-4 pounds (i.e., 2-3%) from the stands you should be playing major league baseball! :-)

Maurice is definitely fatter this year. Too many people have noticed this for it not to be true. I think Boldon is looking noticeably softer too.

Whether Maurice is too heavy or not...he appears to be on the down side of his career.Still running very fast, but slower by about 0.1 to 0.15 that he ran in his prime (in the 100). And his 200 times/performances are even less impressive--which may argue for the observation that he is a bit over weight and not in tip top shape.

I saw Maurice at the Mt. SAC meet and was about 10 yards away from him and thought the exact same thing. It was particulary noticlble from the side, he seemed too thick.
